  9. Sheffield 1966 World Cup star Gordon Banks to be honoured

A permanent tribute to World Cup-winning goalkeeper Gordon Banks, who died earlier this week aged 81, is being discussed by the FA and Sheffield City Council.

    GEORGE BANKS

Banks was awarded "Sheffield Legend" status with the first ever star installed on the city’s hall of fame.

He was born in Abbeydale in 1937 and made 628 appearances during a 15-year career in the Football League.

Councillor Mary Lea said: "The people of Sheffield are sad to hear of the loss this week of Gordon Banks - one of the city's most famous sons.

"We have committed to mark his achievements and are currently in discussions with the FA about how this could best be done."

  10. Traffic warning ahead of memorial fly-past

Motorists are being warned to plan their journeys if attending next week's RAF and USAF fly-past over a Sheffield park.

    The men killed

The fly-past is to mark the anniversary of a fatal World War Two USAF plane crash in a Sheffield park will take place after a campaign led by BBC Breakfast presenter Dan Walker.

Endcliffe Park's limited car parking means people are being encouraged to take public transport to the venue ahead of the 08:45 fly-past, according to Sheffield City Council.

The US bomber - a B-17 Flying Fortress known as Mi Amigo - came down in Endcliffe Park, Sheffield, in 1944 killing all 10 airmen on board.

The campaign began after Dan Walker met Tony Foulds, who witnessed the crash and regularly tends to the park's memorial to the dead airmen.
