  3. Police organise 'spice workshop' to be held in Sheffield

    Police authorities across the country are to meet in Sheffield for a workshop to tackle problems caused by the drug spice.

    South Yorkshire Police have organised the meeting with seven forces to share ideas about drug use in city centres.

    Officers will talk about enforcement, testing, drug service support and sentencing.

    Sgt Scott Szymczak said: “Some forces have been dealing with this issue for a long time, others are yet to see the full impact that this drug can have on their town and city centres.

    "We want officers to share advice about how they’re dealing with users and the knock-on effects.”

    The workshop will be held on 10 January.

    Fire crews had a fluffy rescue on their hands when they scaled a tree to rescue Skye.

  7. Man jailed for robbing vulnerable victim

    A man has been jailed for four years for a "despicable" robbery of a vulnerable victim in Sheffield.

    Ashley Mappin

    Ashley Mappin, of no fixed address, gained entry to the victim's house in Pitmoor at about 07:30 on 15 June 2018.

    Mappin forced the 69-year-old man to open his safe and fled with an amount of cash, Sheffield Crown Court heard.

    The victim, who is a wheelchair user, suffered minor injuries during the altercation.

    PC Zed Gulzar said: “Mappin preyed on a vulnerable individual, a wheelchair user who should have been safe in his own home.

    “This is a despicable crime and throughout our investigation Mappin has shown no remorse, despite his guilty plea."

  9. Watch: Man's pride at looking after plane crash memorial

    A man, who regularly tends a memorial honouring 10 airmen who died in a plane crash in a Sheffield park, says he "loves them like my own son or daughter".

    Tony Foulds saw the B-17 bomber crash in Endcliffe Park in 1944 when he was eight-years-old.

    Since a memorial was erected in the 1970s, Tony has regularly kept plants watered and the area clean to remember the men who died.

    Speaking to BBC Breakfast, the Sheffield man says the crew steered away from him and his friends who were playing in the field before crashing into a wood:

  11. Man killed in New Year's Eve collision named

    A man who died after the car he was driving smashed into railings in the early hours of New Year's Day has been named by police.

    Greg Adams.

    Officers say Greg Adams, 21, was killed when the silver Saab 95 he was driving crashed in Southey Green Road, in Sheffield, near to the junction with Buchanan Road.

    He suffered serious head injuries and died at the scene.

    A passenger in the car escaped uninjured.

    The crash happened at about 04:00.

  12. Penistone residents 'don't have confidence' in police

    A local crime survey suggests "alarmingly" low levels of public confidence in policing in Penistone.

    The work was conducted by Councillor Dave Griffin, who represents the rural Penistone West ward.

    He says even though PCSOs and neighbourhood officers have been reintroduced people don't feel safe compared with those across Barnsley.

    The online survey received responses from 360 people.

  13. South Yorkshire Police 'only want midweek derbies'

    South Yorkshire Police says it doesn't want to police the Sheffield derby on a weekend.

    The force said it had been in touch with the English Football League asking for support in moving the games to weeknights.

    Sheffield Wednesday's home game with Sheffield United in March has been moved from a Saturday 15:00 kick-off to a Monday evening.

    The 2017/2018 fixture has been most expensive policing operation in England with it costing £203,000.

    The home club was billed for £41,000.
