Bradford snowboarder second in World Cup slopestyle event

Bradford snowboarder Jamie Nicholls claimed his first podium finish of the World Cup season with second place in the slopestyle event in Italy.

Belgium's Seppe Smits scored 88.30 points to win, with 23-year-old Nicholls 0.40 behind on 87.90.

"It's been a tough couple of weeks with a little injury, but it was a good day at the office," said Nicholls. "I can't wait for the next few weeks."

Boy's jaw broken by mugger in Leeds

A 16-year-old boy was left with a broken jaw after a mugger attacked him in Leeds.

The boy was on Sycamore Avenue in Halton on 11 January. A man approached him and told him to hand over his phone. 

The schoolboy refused and the man punched him in the head twice. The boy suffered a broken jaw that required pinning in two places. 

Police are looking for mixed race man, who is 6ft tall and aged in his early 20s. He was wearing black clothes with a black baseball cap. 

This was a violent attack on a young victim that left him with serious injuries that required significant hospital treatment. He has been understandably traumatised."

MP lobbies for improvements to A64

A North Yorkshire MP is meeting with Highways England as part of his quest to improve the A64.


Kevin Hollinrake, the MP for Thirsk and Malton wants the road to be a dual carriageway between York and Scarborough.

There are already plans to spend £250m on improvements to the Hopgrove roundabout near York.  

The whole road between York and Malton needs to be turned into a dual carriageway to attract new jobs and businesses to the area and cut the number of accidents."

Thieves steal £902 from a gambling machine in Scarborough

Do you recognise these men? Police want to speak to them after a gambling machine in Scarborough was emptied of cash.

It happened at the Olympia Leisure arcade on Foreshore Road, just before 17:00 on 6 January.

Two men caused the machine to short circuit and empty all of the cash.

The two men took all of the money, totalling £902, and left.

Watch: Brain injury charity celebrates 10 years

A Bradford charity which supports people across Yorkshire affected by brain injuries is celebrating a milestone birthday tonight.

Headway Bradford is hosting an event at City Hall where survivors will share their stories. 

The group started 10 years ago as a small social group - but the charity now has more than 100 people on its books.

Badminton player 'died of head injuries' in Phuket accident

A national badminton champion from Huddersfield died in Thailand when her friend rode their motorbike across a four-lane dual carriageway and into the path of a truck, an inquest has heard.

Rebecca Shaw, 32, from Bradley and played for the England badminton team, was riding pillion on a moped on Phuket in December 2015. 

The inquest into her death at Bradford Coroner's Court heard the moped has hit by a Toyota pickup truck. 

The driver said he could not avoid the scooter.

Julie Robinson, who was in control of the moped said that the driver could have done more to avoid a collision. 

The coroner said Rebecca died of head injuries.

Police in Sheffield say they're not treating the discovery of a man's body in water at Bingham Park this morning as suspicious. 

Part of the area remains cordoned off, the body has yet to be formally identified.

One of the two people cleared of murdering a Leeds student in Italy will find out later if he'll get compensation from the Italian government. 

Rafaelle Sollecito and Amanda Knox were jailed in 2009 for murdering Meredith Kercher, who was on exchange in Perugia. 

Their convictions were overturned and Mr Sollecito is asking for damages for being unlawfully jailed. 

In an interview with the BBC he says he underestimated the seriousness of the case when he was first arrested:

Annette Pyrah started rescuing wildlife after a duckling arrived on her doorstep in Selby.  

She sold her car and then built a wildlife cabin in her back garden.  

Annette's become well-known in the area so if anyone spots any wildlife in trouble, they turn to her. 

She has a very cute hedgehog in her Wildlife Orphanage at Barbly near Selby. 

I have been to visit her sanctuary to hear about the hedgehogs she's looking after at the minute. 

Extra patrols at Sheffield's Weston Park after sex attack

Police investigating a suspected serious, sexual assault in Sheffield on Monday night say they'll continue to put on extra patrols in the area as investigations continue.

A 21-year-old woman went into Weston Park at around 22:48 on Monday night. 

She woke upon the ground around two minutes later with no memory of what happened.

The ambulance service were called and they then contacted the police.

South Yorkshire Police released this statement:

I fully appreciate incidents of this nature can create unrest and heightened fear and I want to offer my assurance that we are treating this incident as a priority and we will continue to provide additional patrols in and around the area to provide reassurance and a high visibility police presence."

Comic book exhibition opens in Leeds

Fans of comics and comic book heroes are in for a treat this weekend in Leeds. 


Two new exhibitions looking at comics and fairy tales have opened up at Abbey House Museum.

The popularity of comic books and super heroes has absolutely skyrocketed in recent years and we've seen them grow to become a huge cultural phenomenon."

The brother of a 19-year-old man who was shot in Harehills in Leeds yesterday and who later died will play for Leeds United this weekend, the club has confirmed.

Raheem Wilks was shot in Harehills yesterday lunchtime and died later in hospital.

A 49-year-old is under arrest on suspicion of murder.

Another delay to re-opening of flood-hit Tadcaster Bridge

More details now on the delay to the re-opening of flood-hit Tadcaster Bridge, which was due to re-open on Tuesday.

Freezing weather's being blamed for the delay in connecting the two sides of the town again for the first time since December 2015 when part of the bridge was washed away during severe flooding.

Since then the town has been split in two with only a temporary footbridge allowing access from one side to the other.

The bridge had originally been due to re-open today, but it was confirmed last week that the opening had to be put back. 

North Yorkshire County Council says the re-opening will now take place in February.

'No suspicious circumstances' over Sheffield park body find

There don't appear to be any suspicious circumstances surrounding the death of a man whose body was found at Bingham Park in Sheffield earlier today, police say.

The man's body was pulled from a pond at the park this morning by police divers.

The area around the dam above the Shepherd's Wheel has been cordoned off for some hours.

Formal identification of the man has not yet taken place, according to South Yorkshire Police.

Craig Alderson was last seen in the early hours of last Saturday morning in the Southowram area. 

Police say they're "growing increasingly concerned" for Craig's welfare and that his disappearance is "very out of character".

A man's body has been pulled from water at Bingham Park in Sheffield this morning.

South Yorkshire police have had a big presence at Bingham Park with the area around the dam above the Shepherd's Wheel taped off while the body was recovered by a regional marine unit with two divers.

The force is expected to make a statement later in the day.

Man's body found in Sheffield Park

A body has been found at Bingham Park in Sheffield which has been the scene of police activity this morning. 

A number of officers and emergency vehicles are at the site.

There is a dam there and a regional police marine unit vehicle is on site along with an ambulance.

One of the most run-down areas of York city centre is to be redeveloped.

Councillors met last night to discuss the "Castle Gateway" which takes in Piccadilly, Coppergate and the Eye of York - which includes the area around Clifford's Tower.

The plans include renovating derelict buildings, turning the castle car park into a public space, and improving the riverside.

It's emerged that the man who died after being shot in Harehills yesterday, and who's understood to be 19-year-old Raheem Wilks, is the brother of Mallik Wilks, who plays for Leeds United's under-23s.
