  3. Radio Sheffield elephant greets visitors arriving by rail

    After months of planning an elephant designed by BBC Radio Sheffield listener Jane Norburn is in place outside the railway station as part of a charity art trail.

  4. Ed Miliband criticises handling of HS2 route alterations

    South Yorkshire MP Ed Miliband is criticising the way changes to the HS2 line through the county have been handled.

    The Doncaster North MP is calling for those behind the plans to meet with people living on a new housing estate in Mexborough, which is set to be demolished to make way for the high speed rail route.

     Mr Miliband says the impact on the local community must be taken into consideration:    

    Quote Message: I want to know that Mexborough, that other people are going to get something out of this - economic development, the parkway station that has been mentioned. There are all kinds of options that the government could put forward to show that they understand the terrible disruption that's going to be caused to our community.

  6. Concerns about HS2 route change impact on historic sites

    The National Trust is raising concerns about the impact of the HS2 high-speed rail route on sites of historic interest in the region.

    The original route takes trains right alongside Hardwick Hall - under the new scheme this will continue.

    But the changed route will also now run very close to Bolsover Castle.

    Hardwick Hall general manager Denise Edward says they're trying to minimise the impact.

    Quote Message: We are working with our head office team with HS2 to look at the various impacts. So we've been doing a lot of studies around noise and visible impact as well as the impact on wildlife, our ecological systems, the fragmentation of our farmland and the internationally-significant setting of Hardwick.
  7. Overturned lorry closes one lane on the M1 Northbound

    One lane of the M1 Northbound is closed with slow traffic between J35A at Stocksbridge and J36 at Birdwell with traffic queuing almost back to J33 at Catcliffe. It's due to an overturned lorry

  8. Police investigate possible slavery case in Rotherham

    An investigation is under way after a Vietnamese teenage boy was found in a distressed state rifling through bins for food in a park in the Maltby area of Rotherham.

    The boy, though to be about 17, was found in Coronation Park on Tuesday. He was taken to safety and South Yorkshire Police say they are trying to find out more about him.

  10. Have you seen missing Doncaster man?

    Police in Doncaster are asking for your help to find missing man Adam Tolley.

    The 29 year old has not been seen since yesterday, when he left an address in the Tickhill Road area around lunchtime

    He has not been heard from since and officers are concerned for his well-being.

  12. Sheffield songwriter helps Spice Girls pen new single

    It's 20 years since the Spice Girls released Wannabe and their classic video was given a special remake.

    The Spice Girls' long-time music producer, Sheffield's own Eliot Kennedy, has revealed he is working on a new track with three of the original band members - Mel B, Geri and Emma.

    A new South Yorkshire festival takes place this weekend.

    The organisers of Hillsfest at Hillsborough Park this weekend say they want to put Hillsborough on the map for all the right reasons.

    It's a celebration of arts and music in the area, and is centered around the park. Among the attractions is a 5 metre high graffiti tower.

  14. Man arrested over Wombwell shooting

    A 21-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after gun shots were fired through a house in Wombwell.

    It happened in Burrows Grove in the early hours of Thursday morning. A woman suffered a minor injury to her arm during the incident.   

  15. Fertilizer spillage disrupts traffic on the A1(M) Southbound in South Yorkshire

    One lane is closed and there is queuing traffic on the A1(M) Southbound between the M18 and Bawtry road because of a large pillage of fertilizer. It is currently being cleared by the fire service.

  17. Sheffield's first Somali Councillor makes maiden speech

    Green Party Councillor Magid Magid, who was elected in May, used his maiden speech to talk about the rise of racism and xenophobia following the EU referendum result.

    Councillor Magid represents the ward of Broomhill and Sharrow Vale and came to Sheffield as a refugee from war-torn Somalia with his family when he was four. 

    He said European and international migrants living in Sheffield “enrich our lives and the society we live in.”

    Quote Message: This city that has welcomed me, my family and many others which I call home is very diverse and it’s only right and proper that Sheffield City Council should reflect that reality. As Sheffield’s first Somali councillor, I’d like to think I’m making my own small contribution to that particular cause. I am proud and honoured to be a councillor and I intend to work hard with courage, conviction and humility while also striving to make a positive difference.”
  18. Roman signal station discovered on forgotten frontier in Sheffield

    Archaeologists working at Whirlow Hall Farm have discovered the site of a Roman signal station high up on a hillside overlooking Sheffield and its surrounding moors.

    The site is located between the Roman forts at Templeborough (under the modern ‘Magna’ centre between Rotherham and Sheffield) and Brough (situated in the Hope Valley near Bradwell).

    It would have formed part of a system for communication along the line of what was then the northern frontier of the Roman Empire.

    Volunteer archeologists

    The local volunteer archaeology group who are co-ordinating the project have been thrilled by the discovery as it goes a long way to demonstrating the existence of the frontier running right through the Whirlow landscape where they have been predicting it to be located.
