  4. Labour re-selects Alan Billings as their PCC candidate

    News in from Labour that the party has re-selected Dr Alan Billings as its candidate for the Police and Crime Commissioner election.

    He's been doing the job since November 2014 when he won the by-election that happened after Shaun Wright resigned.

    The elections for Police and Crime Commissioner were first held in 2012, the role replaced the Police Authority.The turnout in that election was less than 15%.

    Sana Hussain has spoken at a press conference of her family's devastation over the death of her uncle Zabair Hussain.

    The 41-year old was found shortly before midnight on New Year's Eve with serious injuries which he later died of.

  10. Zabair Hussain death: Police seek car as part investigation

    Detectives investigating the death of 41-year-old Zabair Hussain in Darnall on New Year’s Eve have issued details of a car they are keen to trace

    The grey Peugeot 307 - registration number MC57 BZP - was travelling along Staniforth Road, Darnall, from Attercliffe sometime before 23:00 on New Year's Eve.

    Mr Hussein, who was 41, was found with multiple injuries to his head and body and later died.

    Three people have been arrested in connection with his death.

    I'm at a press conference following the death of Darnall man Zabair Hussein on New Year's Eve.

    The niece of Zabair Hussein has said: "Our uncle's death has torn our family apart."

    Mr Hussein, 41, was found seriously injured on Staniforth Road shortly before midnight on New Year's Eve, where he later died.

    Three people have been arrested in connection with the death.

    The Pinchbeck watch has sentimental value as it was manufactured by his uncle's business.

  13. Man and teenager arrested after attack on 80-year-old Maltby ex-miner

    A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after an attack on an 80-year-old former miner at his South Yorkshire home.

    Tommy Ward suffered a "significant neurological injury" in the raid in Maltby last ctober in which it is thought a safety deposit box with £30,000 was stolen.

    A force spokeswoman said Mr Ward had been released from hospital but required "ongoing care".

    A teenage boy has also been arrested on suspicion of handling stolen goods.

    Two other men, both 19, are currently on police bail following the raid in October, a spokesman for South Yorkshire Police said.

    • The teachers' union, the NUT, says strike action at Listerdale Primary School will carry on if resolution can't be reached soon over the suspension of their headteacher
    • There's a deadline today for the South Yorkshire Fire Authority's plans to cut a quarter of control operators in the region
    • Trading standard officers in Sheffield have closed down three shops illegally selling whisky meant for export, thereby evading tax.

    Remember the row over teachers going on strike at a Rotherham primary school? 

    Looks like it might continue, the teachers' union the NUT say the strike at Listerdale Primary School will carry on if resolution can't be reached soon over the suspension of their headteacher.
