  7. Car park charges bring in over £3m for Sheffield Teaching Hospitals

    Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust made more than £3m in car parking charges in 2014-15, it's been revealed.

    The Trust is among seven English hospital trusts who took over £3m, a Freedom of Information study by the Press Association's found.

    Chesterfield NHS Trust took £1.19m in the same period, while Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust made £1.12m.

    In a statement, the Sheffield Trust says it's the second largest in the country and has significantly higher numbers of car parking spaces. It also says its parking costs equate to about 76p per hour. 

  8. Why don't birds go grey? Sheffield University has found the answer

    Scientists at Sheffield University have worked out why birds don't go grey as they age - a discovery they say could lead to a new generation of fade-proof paint and clothing. 

    A team from Sheffield University looked at how the colours are created in the blue-and-white feathers of the jay

    They found that they come from the way they are structured rather than the pigments that colour human hair.

  11. Police officer jailed over child images: Force 'willing to investigate wrongdoing'

    South Yorkshire Police has responded to news that one of the force's officers who sent "suggestive and flirtatious" messages to vulnerable women and was found with 1,400 indecent images of children on his home computer has been jailed for 12 months.

    Lee Lucas (pictured), 39, of Prince of Wales Road, Sheffield, has been handed the sentence at Sheffield Crown Court after earlier admitting eight counts of making indecent images and one of misconduct in a public office.

    In October 2013, the force’s Professional Standards Department launched an internal investigation exploring whether any officers were abusing their position by contacting vulnerable members of the public.

  13. Arrest over abduction and shooting of Barnsley man found in Scotland

    A 48-year-old man has been arrested over the alleged abduction and shooting of another man who was dumped in Scotland, more than 250 miles from his home in South Yorkshire.

    The victim, 45, was attacked by men at his home in Dodworth, Barnsley, and shot in the legs and abandoned in East Kilbride, South Lanarkshire, on 13 March.

    The arrest follows a large-scale cross-border investigation.

  15. Sacked South Yorkshire Police officer 'a predator'

    A sacked South Yorkshire Police constable who's been jailed for misconduct in dealing with vulnerable women and making hundreds of indecent images of children is "a predator", a judge has said.

    Jailing 39-year-old Lee Lucas, of Prince of Wales Road, Sheffield, for 12 months, the judge at Sheffield Crown Court added that Lucas had undermined public confidence in the police.

    Lucas had earlier admitted eight counts of making indecent images and one of misconduct in a public office.
