  9. Rotherham abuse trial: Detective 'had sex with girls and supplied drugs'

A woman has told the Rotherham child sexual exploitation trial that a police officer she confided in had sex with girls at houses where she was staying and would pass seized drugs to one of the defendants.

Over three days in the witness box, the woman has described how she was repeatedly abused and assaulted from the age of 11 when she was in the care of the local authority.

She described how she told a detective about what happened but no action was taken. She told the jury at Sheffield Crown Court: "He used to come to houses where we were.

"He used to have sex with girls and he used to take drugs from people and pass them on to Ash."

The jury heard that two of the seven defendants - Arshid Hussain and Qurban Ali - were known as Mad Ash and Blind Ash respectively. The witness did not clarify which one she was referring to.

Karen MacGregor, 58, Arshid Hussain, 40, Qurban Ali, 53, Majid Bostan, 37, Sajid Bostan, 38, Basharat Hussain, 39, and Shelley Davies, 40, all deny a range of charges.

    Katie Galbraith

    BBC Radio Sheffield

The last 450 deep coal miners in Yorkshire are to receive severance packages at 12 weeks of average pay.

At its height, Kellingley employed more than 2,000 workers. At the same time, up to 500,000 people were working in the coal industry nationally.

Hatfield, the last deep coal mine in South Yorkshire, closed earlier this year with the loss of 430 jobs.

Quote Message: The final 450 miners, the last in a long line stretching back for generations, are having to search for new jobs before the shafts that lead down to 30 million tons of untouched coal are sealed with concrete. This is a very sad day as our proud industrial heritage is destroyed [by the government]." from Phil Whitehurst National Officer of the GMB union
