Residents in the former north and south Shropshire districts have been able to recycle food waste with their garden waste for several years.

New group formed to make use of surplus supermarket food

Tracey Higgins

BBC Local Live

A new group has been formed in Shrewsbury to make use of surplus supermarket food that would otherwise go in the bin.

The Shrewsbury Food Hub gets nightly alerts  and the next day volunteers collect what isn't needed and hands it out to charities and non-profit organisations.

Denise Baker McClearn

There's a meeting tonight at the United Reformed Church, near English Bridge in Shrewsbury at 19:30, to recruit more helpers and convince more retailers to take part.

Supermarkets have a very strict policy of how long they can have their food on sale for and they have this ridiculous thing called best before dates, which is about quality, not safety. So we said give it to us and we'll distribute it to groups in need.
