  6. Warning after children seen playing near flooded lock

    Newark Town Lock underwater

A warning has been issued after children were reportedly seen playing near a flooded lock area in a Nottinghamshire town.

Newark and Sherwood District Council tweeted a picture of Newark Town Lock, which flows into the River Trent, with water covering the canal path beneath picnic benches.

The image shows how difficult it is to see where the watercourse and the towpath should be.

The authority warned against crossing swollen rivers and advised against entering floodwater altogether as it was likely to be deeper than it appeared.

From the picture it appears Sean Cupitt's property has its own lake, but it is actually due to flooding overnight.

Mr Cupitt, who has lived there for two or three years, has been using a small boat to transport sand bags to try to protect a part of the house that is not flooded.

On seeing what had happened he said: "I thought I was dreaming. I was blown away."
