Trade unions have told the BBC in the East Midlands there are an expected 4,000 job losses worldwide to be announced later, with possible ramifications for Derby.

"If a huge number of jobs were to go in Derby, it would hit the whole city, not just those who work at the company," BBC Derby reporter Chris Doidge told Radio Five Live's Wake up to Money.

“People in Derby are slightly nervous," he adds.

He says there was a cloud of doubt around the Derby plant a few months ago, which was resolved when the company decided to build its new test-bed facility in the city.

“That secured Rolls-Royce’s future in Derby. Manufacturing of engines has been moving abroad but Derby is much more about R and D.”

Vision for Melton relief road becomes clearer

Amy Orton

Local Democracy Reporter

Leicestershire County Council's preferred route for the Melton relief road has been revealed.

The preferred route - running from north to south to the east of the town - is slightly different to the recommended route already submitted to the Department of Transport as part of the funding bid by the county council.

The changes have been made following a public consultation last year, and further discussions with landowners.

The proposed road will start at Nottingham Road to the north of Melton, working round the east of the town, passing the country park, Twin Lakes and Thorpe Arnold before re-joining the A606 south of the town.

There will be roundabouts where it meets Scalford Road, Melton Spinney Road, the A607, Saxby Road and Burton Road.

Earlier this year, the authority secured £49.5m of government funds with about £14m also committed by the county and borough councils which will be recouped from housing development.

The county council will submit an application to its own planning authority in the summer. It is hoped that the road will be built and in use by 2022.

The Lights Fest, which combines live music, food and lanterns is coming to Buxton in July.

Steve Wells, from Derbsyhire Fire and Rescue, said: "A wild fire at Baslow was a relatively small fire to start with but it spread to something in the region of 50 football pitches by the time it had finished.

"We don't want to be repeating that scenario when it is foreseeable."

The festival's website states that the lantern launch is "dependent on... the fire marshal's approval" and they will land in "designated property for easy retrieval".
