  11. Ken Clarke's Brexit speech met with applause

    Dave Wade

    BBC Local Live

Rushcliffe MP Ken Clarke just received a round of sustained applause in the House of Commons after his EU bill debate speech.

The clapping - which isn't allowed under parliamentary convention - came after his killer closing line: "I am the rebel".

    Ken Clarke

He said there were only two MPs still in the House, who were present in 1972 when the European Communities Act was passed: Labour MP for Bolsover Dennis Skinner and himself.

Pro-EU Mr Clarke adds that he and Mr Skinner have always voted in opposite ways on Europe and the government have more chance of support from Mr Skinner than from him.

    Dennis Skinner

He said the idea has been "put forward by UKIP and others that [the act] led faceless, grey Eurocrats to produce vast quantities of awful legislation and red tape is one of the biggest myths of our time".

But he paid tribute to former UKIP leader Nigel Farage's "campaigning abilities", calling him "the most successful politician of my generation".

He joked that people persuaded by Mr Farage "are all looking forward to bent bananas again once we actually repeal this piece of legislation".

    Press Association

Leicester midfielder Adrien Silva insists he was "disgusted" by the injustice which has left him in exile.

The Portugal international cannot play forthe Foxes until January after the paperwork for his £22m move from Sporting Lisbon was filed 14 seconds after August's transfer deadline.

    Adrien Silva

Leicester's appeal was rejected by FIFA which has left Silva facing four months out and unhappy with the situation.

Silva told Portuguese public broadcaster RTP: "I had a lot of desire to talk about the injustice. I was disgusted by this, but people calmed me, they advised me that I had to let go of a painful time to express myself in a calmer, less aggressive way. It was the best decision.

"I cannot hide that it was a big disappointment. I felt a great disillusionment with everything that happened, which I was not responsible for, but I am the big loser. It is not a short time without playing."
