    Maryam Qaiser

It has turned out to be another warm day - and one organisation has used the sunny weather to warn people not to cool down by jumping in rivers or canals.

  13. Campaign launched for Armed Forces Day event in Nottingham

    Maryam Qaiser

    BBC Local Live

A Nottingham man has started a campaign to get an Armed Forces Day event held in the city this weekend.

Eight years ago, a large regional event was held at the Victoria Embankment and since then, a smaller, annual event has been held in Wollaton Hall.

But Andy Shaw feels there should be a city event to pay tribute to army veterans.

He said: "A soldier shouldn't have a figure put on his life, a soldier when he signs up, signs a blank cheque and says I am willing to die for you."

Nottingham City Council has previously funded and organised the event - which marks the contribution and sacrifices made by Britain's armed forces.

But this year the authority did not commit to organising an event. Instead, they invited local groups to come forward and organise an event in exchange for a free venue and funding.

    Armed Forces Day

Larger regional events will take place in Newark and Derby and the city council said it hoped to be the host city again in the future.

Smaller events are also taking places in Mansfield and West Bridgford.
