Residents worried incinerator plans could 'emit toxic fumes'

Khia Lewis-Todd

BBC Local Live

Campaigners against plans for an incinerator near Darley Abbey are worried it could emit toxic fumes.

The company Enviro fusion applied for a temporary permit to test the thermal process of the plant which it said will be subject to 'rigorous' emissions standards.

If plans are given the go-ahead they plan to build the incinerator on a site it already occupies Northedge Business Park on Alfreton Road.

enviro fusion

There have been nearly 100 letters of objection against the plans.

enviro fusion

Enviro fusion said the permit it applied for is strictly temporary and it is not planning to operate a commercial waste to energy plant.

Enviro fusion

If they got the application it wouldn't stop them coming back and applying for it to be a permanent one - I would be very much against that and so would my constituents."

Sheep gives birth to six lambs

Dave Wade

BBC Local Live

A Peak District ewe has given birth to not one, not two but SIX lambs.

Sheep usually have one or two young but on a farm in Parwich, near Ashbourne, a ewe has had sextuplets - three black and three white.

The chances of that happening are more than one in a million, according to their owner, Patricia Brindley.

Their mum couldn't feed such a large litter, so the weakest has been bottle-fed by Patricia.

She said her "boxing mad" grandchildren have named him AJ after heavyweight champion, Anthony Joshua.

Hope for memorial to Belsen survivor

Ryan Morrison

BBC News Online

A historian who found the grave of a survivor of Bergen-Belsen hopes to arrange for a better memorial to the man.

Frank Le Villio
Jersey Heritage

Frank Le Villio was arrested in Jersey in 1944 for taking a joyride on a German soldier's motorbike. He was sent to a French prison but later ended up in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp.

He died at the age of 21 in Nottingham of tuberculosis a year after being liberated from the camp and historian Stanley Keiller found he was buried in a pauper's grave in the city.

He says after finding it the grave was cleaned up by the local vicar but he hopes a larger more permanent memorial can be put up.

'Everybody is in utter shock,' says family friend

A woman whose 16-year-old sister went on the school trip where an 11-year-old girl died, said the pupils and staff have been left devastated by the tragedy.

Evha Jannath fell out of a circular boat on the Splash Canyon attraction during a school trip to Drayton Manor Theme Park on Tuesday.

Zainab Mohammad

It's tragic. We don't know what the cause is but what we really want is for the family to be able to grieve. A family member has been ripped from [them] and it's a big loss. Everybody is in utter shock - there are no words. I couldn't sleep last night, thinking of this."

Zainab Mohammad (pictured)Sister was a friend of Evah Jannath

Asked how her sister was coping, she said. "She was devastated. She didn't want to talk about it. Nobody knows what's happened, we can't speculate on what has happened. The school is not very big, everybody know each other."

Gardeners asked to look out for 'alien invader'

Scientists are calling for people across the East Midlands to look for these - the New Zealand flatworm...

New Zealand flatworm
University of Nottingham

Experts at the University of Nottingham call them an "alien invader" which is preying on the UK’s native population of earthworms.

They attack by wrapping themselves around the earthworm and secreting digestive mucus to dissolve them before consuming them.

New Zealand flatworm
University of Nottingham

Originating from New Zealand the worm was accidentally introduced to the UK in plant imports in the 1960s.

Scientists are asking gardeners and nature lovers to be their eyes on the ground and keep a look out for the creature.

It is very important that we build up as accurate a picture as possible in the midlands region as our earthworms may be under attack. Every record we receive will help us to understand the distribution and impact of these flatworms, so we can develop the best response.”
