Gang planned £1.9m rolling tobacco scam

Hardy's gang was in the process of setting up an illegal counterfeit tobacco factory, which would have netted them millions of pounds in unpaid duty, when they were raided in 2008.

At a farm in Leicestershire, officers discovered more than 16 tonnes of raw leaf tobacco which would have been manufactured into hand-rolling tobacco, potentially avoiding an estimated £1.9 million.

Bulgarian anti-organised crime officers raided premises linked to the scam.

Hardy was arrested in November in Cape Town and held in a prison there until he was extradited to Heathrow this morning.

'One of UK's most wanted fugitives' jailed

A West Bridgford man, who was one of the UK’s most wanted tax fugitives, has been jailed for three years and three months for his role in a £1.9m plot to manufacture illicit tobacco on a commercial scale.

Wayne Hardy, 56, fled to Cape Town in 2010 before he was sentenced to three years and three months in his absence.

He was extradited from South Africa to face trial at Ipswich Crown Court today, where he was found guilty and three months were added to his tariff.

Hardy's the fifth and final member of the gang to go to prison. Four others were jailed in 2011 for their part in the scam.

Clough on Forest rumours: 'It's a logical link'

Burton Albion manager Nigel Clough has put the record straight on over talk he could be replacing Philippe Montanier at Nottingham Forest.

"I spent 18 years at that club [Forest], I've spent 11 here so it's a logical link for some people," he said.

Earlier at PMQs, Nottingham South MP Lillian Greenwood asked the Prime Minister for help for a family whose nine-year-old son was killed by the rider of a speeding motorbike in Greece.

The motorbike rider remains free after appealing his sentence for involuntary homicide but the family are seeking justice.

Dashcam footage used to jail burglars

Two men, who have been jailed today for burgling an elderly couple's home in Mansfield, were caught using dashcam footage from a passing driver.

John Shaw, 36, of Sutton-in-Ashfield, and Sefton Brown, 37, formerly of Kirkby-in-Ashfield, stole a wallet from the couple's Chesterfield Road South home in July last year.

Leicester Crown Court heard a passing motorist had recorded the pair acting suspiciously in the couple's front garden and continued to film them rifling through the wallet before discarding photos from it in a bin.

Shaw was jailed for four years and six months after being found guilty of burglary. Brown, who admitted burglary, was jailed for three years and eight months.

A 52-year-old man who died after a fall while walking in Snowdonia has been named as Neil Parnell, from Nottingham.

Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue and RAF Kinloss were called to Bristley Ridge between Tryfan and Glyder Fach just before 15:00 yesterday, North Wales Police said.

Mr Parnell was airlifted to Ysbyty Gwynedd in Bangor, where he was later pronounced dead.

Trust members would also have to be on board with any decision to buy the club.

Mechanic jailed for £450k 'chop shop'

Parts from cars stolen in Nottingham were found at a "chop shop" in the West Midlands, a court has heard.

Mechanic Eamonn O'Malley, 59, was jailed for three years and seven months for receiving stolen goods at Wolverhampton Crown Court on Friday.

Police were alerted to his car yard in Tipton by a tracking device from a stolen BMW.

At least 22 stolen vehicles with a combined value of £448,000 had passed through the yard from across the West Midlands, Manchester, London, Stoke-on-Trent and Nottingham, police said.

Man arrested over 'arson' at former cinema

A teenager has been arrested in connection with a suspected arson attack at a former cinema.

Firefighters and police were called to reports of a fire at the old Galaxy cinema on Derby Road, Long Eaton around 22:30 last night.

The 18-year-old, who lives in Long Eaton, was arrested in the early hours of this morning and will be questioned later today.

Horse dumpings 'just tip of iceberg'

It's not been a nice subject to talk about but you'll have probably heard about a spate of horses being dumped in various places across the East Midlands recently.

According to a local charity, the recent dumpings, including in Calverton earlier this month (pictured) are just the "tip of the iceberg".

Janice Dixon, a vet from Help for Horses, said mandatory microchips were not being used and people were scared to report culprits.

She said she knew of seven cases in the past three months in the East Midlands.

Collymore to propose 'sporting director' role

Former Nottingham Forest striker Stan Collymore said he wants a role at the club "to prove what he can do". 

Collymore said he's been asked to put into writing a proposal to create a new role as "sporting director". 

He met with owner Fawaz Al-Hasawi in London last night. 

Meanwhile, Forest are at Leeds in the Championship tonight without injured defender Matt Mills.
