School parents system 'sensationalised'

Dave Wade

BBC Local Live

Ms Chambers said she was "shocked" at the reaction to the system.

Greasley Baeuvale

"In my playground when I’ve been out and about, everyone was really positive about it. It’s been sensationalised with 'headteacher grades parents'," she said

"I guess we do in a sense, but it’s grading the partnership."

She went on to say the school has had "fantastic success stories of families that have had these interventions" - "It really does make a big difference," she added.

Eastwood school not 'ranking' parents

Dave Wade

BBC Local Live

You might have seen a story in the Nottingham Post and the Daily Mail today about Greasley Beuvale School, near Eastwood that's "ranking" parents.

Well today the headteacher Donna Chambers has defended the system which she says is about engaging parents.

She insisted the "parental partnership descriptors" she gives to parents are not grades.

donna chambers

“For those who were not engaging with a child’s learning or with the school, we had a meeting with them to see what we can do," she explained.

"For some, they might work full-time and they may need a parents' evening at 07:30, some can’t access a child’s learning because of their own literacy and numeracy skills."

Shar-peis bred to have wrinkly faces

Dave Wade

BBC Local Live

Hector was taken to a council pound where unclaimed animals are sometimes destroyed after a week.

Luckily he was taken in by Halfway HomeDog Rescue, which has got his tail wagging again.

The centre's founder, Val Hosegood, said: "Shar-Pei are bred to have these wrinkly faces but in Hector's case the folds are rubbing on his eyes and if not fixed, he will go blind."

Hector's treatment could be as high as £3,000 so Val has turned to fundraising to cover the costs.

Hector the Shar-pei needs a facelift

Dave Wade

BBC Local Live

Meet Hector. He's a Shar-pei and he needs a facelift to save his sight. Seriously.

He came in to BBC Nottingham earlier and he was ace. But his story is a sad one.

He was found as a stray in Bradford and was in poor shape - severely underweight and with missing fur. He was in danger of being put down.

But a Newark rescue centre took him in and is raising £1,500 so he can be restored to health and re-homed.

Dave Wade

BBC Local Live

The Post Office began a consultation over whether to move the Stapleford branch from Church Street to a counter inside the Bargain Booze store in Derby Road.

Bike thefts 'small proportion of bike users'

Dave Wade

BBC Local Live

Nottinghamshire Police have said that while they're concerned by the number of bicycle thefts, it's a relatively small proportion of the number of people using bikes.

decoy bike

Inspector Rob Wilson said, while many thefts are opportunist, some bikes are stolen to order.

"People run a form of business in having bikes stolen and selling them on," he said.

"We use decoy bikes, often with an electronic trackers in them so we can track the bike and identify it as well."
