Pigsy Wather commented: "They're one of the symbols of the sanitisation of the modern game whereby fans aren't fans anymore, they're customers to be fleeced incessantly."

'Daily Mail spider' bites not fatal

Dave Wade

BBC Local Live

Tim Sexton said the false widow is often referred to as "the Daily Mail spider" due to horror stories appearing about the spider in the newspapers.

But although the bites can be painful, they're no worse than a bee sting, he said, and the pain lasts up to 12 hours. Most importantly, they're NOT lethal.

"False widows are mostly active at night and from my experience, would rather make a hasty retreat than bite you for the sake of it," he said.

"It is unlikely you would ever see one on the reserve during the day, unless you are really looking for it."
