  3. Man jailed for five months over police attack

    A man who attacked and threatened to kill police officers has been jailed for five months - days after it was announced that those who assault emergency workers will face tougher punishments.

    Ashley Ward, 34, of Rook Drive, Taverham, Norfolk, head-butted two officers, tried to punch one of them, and was verbally abusive and threatening as they arrested him after an incident at his home on Saturday.

    He admitted three counts of assaulting a police officer and a public order offence at Norwich Magistrates' Court on Monday.

    He was sentenced to 20 weeks in prison and ordered to pay £115 in compensation.

    On Friday, it was announced that sentences will be increased for anyone convicted of assault on emergency service workers. The new law comes into effect in November.
