  10. Captain Beefheart's life and work celebrated in Liverpool

    Liverpool is celebrating cult American musician Captain Beefheart.

    Don Van Vliet whose stage name was Captain Beefheart retired from the music industry in the 80s to concentrate on his primary love – painting.

    The events, which start today, will also explore his specific relationship to Liverpool, where he performed several times.

    The programme takes place at Bluecoat in Liverpool city centre and ends on Sunday.

  11. Blackpool FC put up for sale after Oystons lose court battle

    The Oyston family has put Blackpool Football Club up for sale after losing a multimillion-pound court battle with Valeri Belokon.

    Valeri Belokon (right) claimed Owen Oyston and his family treated the club like "their own personal cash machine"

    The Oystons were ordered by a High Court judge to buy Mr Belokon(pictured right) out for £31m on Monday.

    Mr Belokon alleged the Oystons had shown unfair prejudice against shareholders during a civil trial.

    In a statement, the club said:"The directors of Blackpool Football Club and Blackpool Football Club Properties are now in a position, following the conclusion of litigation, to market for sale Blackpool Football Club Limited and Blackpool Football Club Properties Limited."

    The statement adds that the Oystons intend to appeal "elements of the judgment with immediate effect".

  12. Cycling: Former Manchester based Olympian suing UK Sport and British Cycling

    Former Manchester based Great Britain Olympian, Jess Varnish, is suing both UK Sport and British Cycling.

    A source close to Varnish has told BBC Sport her legal action is based on claims the 26-year-old suffered sex discrimination, detriment for whistleblowing, victimisation and unfair dismissal.

    The sprinter was dropped from British Cycling's elite programme last year, after which former technical director Shane Sutton was found to have used sexist language towards her.

    Sutton resigned but was later cleared of eight of nine allegations.

  14. Merseyside PC admits possessing child sex abuse images

    A Merseyside police constable has admitted possessing more than 1,400 indecent images of children.

    Darren Wright

    Darren Wright, 38, of Chester Road, Southport, admitted five offences involving downloading, distributing and possessing the images.

    Liverpool Crown Court was told he possessed a total of 1,417 indecent images and had downloaded 23 in the most serious category.

    Merseyside Police said Wright was sacked for gross misconduct in October.
