The Sun journalists banned from Liverpool FC

Liverpool FC has banned the Sun from all its premises over its coverage of the Hillsborough disaster, the BBC understands.

The newspaper has been widely boycotted in the city following a campaign by the Total Eclipse of The S*n group.

The paper's journalists and reporters will no longer be allowed on site to cover matches and press conferences. 

A Sun spokesperson said the move was "bad for fans and bad for football".

The Total Eclipse of The S*n group tweeted: "Further to conversations with LFC Directors we are happy to inform you that s*n journalists are no longer enjoy access to all Club premises."

The club declined to comment.

Shootings on Merseyside 'can't go on'

Merseyside's Police and Crime Commissioner says the force is working with the National Crime Agency to reduce the supply of guns into the region.

Since April last year, there have been 80 shootings with one in Toxteth last night and shots fired at a house in Thornton, Sefton with a young baby and child inside last week.

Jane Kennedy says these reckless attacks "can't go on".

The public of Merseyside can be reassured that the effort being made to tackle this is absolute total commitment."

M53 to stay closed until this evening after body found

The M53 in Wirral is now expected to stay closed into this evening after a man's body was found on the central reservation. 

Merseyside Police are working to identify the man and find out how he died - at this stage they believe he was hit by a car around 19:00 last night. 

Diversions are in place around the motorway between Junction 2 for Moreton and Junction 3 for Woodchurch.

Five arrested after handgun and drugs found in Knowsley

Five teenagers have been arrested after a handgun and drugs were seized in Knowsley. 

Police searched a property in Kirkby yesterday and found cannabis, cocaine and what is thought to be heroin, as well as a firearm and ammunition. 

Three men aged 19, a 16-year-old boy and a girl aged 16 are being questioned on suspicion of possession with intent to supply Class A and Class B drugs.

Man due in court over historical sex offences at children's home

A man is due to appear in court accused of sexually abusing girls as young as eight at a care home.

The offences relate to alleged incidents involving four girls aged eight and 16 at Harris Children’s Home in Preston in the 1970s.

The home, which was in Garstang Road, closed in 1982.  

Christopher Hartley, 56, of Denham Avenue, Warrington, is accused of attempted rape, seven counts of indecent assault and four counts of inciting a girl to commit an act of gross indecency.

He has been summonsed to appear at Preston Magistrates’ Court on 23 February.

Former Liverpool university student 'joins fight against IS'

A British woman who has travelled to Syria to fight so-called Islamic State has said she is willing to die in the battle against the militant group.

Kimberley Taylor, told the Guardian she joined Kurdish forces known as the YPJ in March last year.

The 27-year-old, who is on the front line in Raqqa, said fighting IS was for "humanity and all oppressed people".

The former maths student at the University of Liverpool is the first known woman from the UK to successfully travel to Syria to join the fight against IS.

Anti-IS forces have been trying to recapture Raqqa since it became the group's defacto capital in 2014.

The body of a man has been found on a motorway in Merseyside.

The M53 in Wirral was closed after police received reports from motorists at about 19:15 yesterday.

Officers found the body on the central reservation. The circumstances of the man's death are unclear but officers believe there had been a crash.

The M53 remains closed between junctions 2 and 3. Traffic restrictions are also in place on the bridge from Upton Road and motorists are advised to use other routes.

Two empty bullet casings were found nearby and neighbours said they heard loud bangs and shouting in the street.

A man attacked a 16-year-old girl and a 45-year-old woman in St Johns Shopping Centre at about 16:00 on 18 January. 

Police said they have been left distressed by what happened.

CCTV images of a man officers want to speak to have been released. Anyone with information is asked to contact police.

The M53 in Wirral is closed after a man's body was found on the central reservation.

Police were alerted by drivers on the motorway at 19:15 last night after the man was spotted between Junction 2 for Moreton and Junction 3 at Woodchurch.

Officers sealed off both carriageways and a body was found.

At this stage it is unclear how the man died - but police believe there had been a crash.

There are no reports of any other injuries and police are working to identify the man.

The M53 is likely to be closed in both directions until lunchtime.
