Weather: Wet overnight with showers tomorrow

This evening should be dry, but outbreaks of rain will begin early in the night. 

These will gradually turn heavier and more persistent but It will be less cold compared to recent nights with a minimum temperature of 3C.

A grey afternoon with lots of cloud. Some bright spells but feeling chilly. Highs of 6C.

Tomorrow will be a cloudy and wet start to the weekend, although brighter but showery weather will arrive into The Wirral Peninsula and spread east. 

The showers may turn heavy at times, especially during the afternoon. Maximum temperature 7C.

A murder investigation has been launched after a man was shot in the head and chest at a meat market.

Thomas Baker was found badly injured at Stanley Meat Market in the Old Swan area of Liverpool at about 08:15 GMT.

The 44-year-old, from the Everton area, was given first aid at the scene and taken to hospital but later died.

Mr Baker's family have been informed and a post-mortem is due to take place later, said Merseyside Police, who are carrying out house-to-house inquiries.

Meat market shooting: Police hunt 'small grey car'

Police investigating the fatal shooting of a man in Liverpool are looking for a small grey car believed to have been used by the gunman.

Thomas Baker, 44, from Everton, was attacked as he left the Phoenix Gym next to the Stanley Meat Market in Old Swan just after 08:00. 

He was taken to hospital with head and chest injuries, and died a short time later. 

Det Supt Mark Guinness said police think his attacker had been waiting outside the gym for some time.

A man had visited a gym on the site of a market before being killed in a shooting, police believe.

James Bulger's mum rewarded for her services to the community

The mother of murdered toddler James Bulger has been given an award for her work with a charity she founded in his memory. 

Denise Fergus said she wanted her son's name to be remembered in a "more positive way". 

She launched the James Bulger Memorial Trust to support victims of crime, hatred or bullying in 2011 - the year her son would have turned 21. 

Ms Fergus, of Kirkby, was given the British Citizen Award for her services to the community.

A post mortem examination is due to take place later.

A man was has been seriously injured in a "targeted" shooting at a market in Liverpool.

Police were called to Stanley Meat Market in Old Swan at about 08.15. The victim was given first aid before being taken to hospital.

The scene has been sealed off and police are analysing CCTV and making house-to-house inquiries.

Det Ch Insp Beverley Hyland appealed for witnesses to come forward, adding: “Our enquiries are clearly at a very early stage, although it does appear that this was a targeted incident."

Plans for all schools to install defibrillators will be debated in Parliament later following a campaign by Liverpool-based Oliver King Foundation.

MP Maria Caulfield, the Conservative member for Lewes, introduced the Defibrillators Bill - after hearing about the Liverpool schoolboy Oliver King, who died from sudden arrhythmic death syndrome at the age of 12. 

She is calling for every school in the country to have access to a life-saving defibrillator and will put her case forward in the house of commons later.

A teenager arrested after a man died in a shooting has been released on bail.

Blake Brown, 30, of Croxteth, died in hospital after being shot in the head in Southwood Road, Aigburth in Liverpool, in October 2016.

A 17-year old boy was questioned on suspicion of conspiracy to commit murder and was released on conditional bail pending further inquiries.

A property in West Derby was searched by police yesterday as part of the murder investigation.

Plans to build 400 homes on former Alder Hey Hospital site to be reconsidered

Alder Hey Children's Hospital says it has agreed with the council to look again at controversial plans to build 400 homes on the site of their old building.

Plans submitted by the trust in December attracted criticism from local residents.
