Made in Liverpool

Communities Secretary, Sajid Javid, said the money could help to create more than 15,000 jobs and encourage economic growth by attracting more private investment over the next five years.

Mr Javid's announcement follows the government's first regional cabinet meeting, held in Daresbury, Cheshire during which Prime Minister Theresa May unveiled plans for a new, more interventionist, industrial strategy.

For too long we've had too much decision making that has been centralised... but I think everyone recognises when it comes to big decisions like transport you need councils to work together. That's why this combined authority for the Liverpool City Region I think is going to make a big change.

In a film soundtracked by the Stone Roses song, Mersey Paradise, the audience watched his evolution from bricklayer to Lord Mayor of Liverpool, Hillsborough campaigner and finally MP.

In his speech, he pledged to reduce the cost of the Mersey Tunnel tolls and cut the cost of a fast tag for local residents - making each journey £1.

The current fast tag scheme provides a 50p discount on the standard charge of £1.70.

He also vowed to work together with Liverpool’s elected Mayor Joe Anderson, who also lost out in the selection contest, and introduce a Liverpool City Region Renewable Energy Company, with the aim of harnessing the tidal power of the River Mersey.

The MP is one of four candidates announced for the May election, alongside Conservative Tony Caldeira, Liberal Democrat Carl Cashman and Tom Crone of the Green Party.

UKIP have not yet announced a candidate.
