  2. Rare Rothschild's giraffe makes zoo walkabout debut

    A three-week-old giraffe has taken its first outdoor stroll at Chester Zoo.

    Murchison, a rareRothschild's giraffe, is named after Murchison Falls in Uganda which is home to the largest remaining population of the animal.

    Conservationists estimate there to be only 1,600 of them left across Africa.

    Fiona Howe from the zoo said: "Murchison was born on Boxing Day and since then he’s chosen to spend some quality time with mum Tula, who has really taken motherhood in her stride. 

    "Now he’s really starting to find his feet and explore his habitat."

  7. Liverpool theatre's £2m Arts Council funding boost

    Liverpool's Royal Court Theatre has been awarded £2m by Arts Council to build a new basement comedy and music venue.

    Plans include the building of a new 150 seat studio space which will be used for small scale comedy and music events, as well as small theatre productions which could then be developed for the main auditorium. 

    It will also be used by the Youth Theatre and Community Choir for rehearsals and performances.

  8. Two men arrested over Stockbridge Village shooting

    Two men have been arrested following a shooting in Stockbridge Village on Wednesday. 

    A 22-year-old man from Whiston and a 25-year-old man from Rainhill have been arrested on suspicion of wounding. 

    They have been taken to a police station in Merseyside to be interviewed.

    A 25-year-old man has been charged with threats to kill after a disturbance at a house led to a six-hour stand-off with armed police.

  13. Anthony Grainger police shooting 'was murder', claims mum

    The mother of a man who was shot by police has told the inquiry into his death she believes it was "murder".

    Marina Schofield told Liverpool Crown Court her "whole world fell apart" when she was told her son, Anthony Grainger, had died in March 2012.

    Mr Grainger, 36, was shot once in the chest during a Greater Manchester Police operation in Culcheth, Cheshire.

    GMP believed the father-of-two was part of a group planning an armed robbery and insist that "suspicions held by those investigating Mr Grainger... were both reasonable and correct".

    The inquiry continues.

  15. Hillsborough report will have 'national significance'

    The retired Bishop of Liverpool says a report he is preparing for the Home Office about the families of Hillsborough victims will have "national significance" when it's published.

    Bishop James Jones has been asked by the government to put together an official record of the families experiences, and will submit his findings in the spring.

    He chaired the Hillsborough Independent Panel, whose report led to the quashing of the 1989 tragedy's inquest verdicts.  

    The fresh inquests concluded in 2016 the fans were unlawfully killed.

    The adviser to the Home Secretary on Hillsborough said relatives have told him things they have "never said before".
