A D-Day veteran from the Wirral has been awarded France's highest honour.

Sidney Keats, 90, from Moreton joined the Royal Navy when he was 17-years-old. 

He was presented the Legion D'Honneur medal for risking his life to secure France's liberation during World War Two.

He says he'll wear it "in tribute to those who didn't come home".

Two arrested after fatal scrambler-style motorbike crash are released

Two men arrested following a fatal scrambler-style motorbike crash in Kirkby have been released while inquiries continue. 

Kevin McPadden, 36, died after he was hit by the vehicle at the junction of County Road and St Kevin's Drive yesterday.

Three men suffered slash wounds to their faces during an attack in a Liverpool nightclub early this morning.

Detectives have released CCTV images of a man they want to speak to.

They are also appealing for taxi drivers who were in the area at the time to come forward.

Police hunt for a man caught "surfing" on top of a train travelling at up to 75mph in Merseyside.

The man was seen climbing on to the Merseyrail train between two carriages at Rock Ferry station in Wirral on 11 December.

A few minutes later he was seen on CCTV on top of the train at Bromborough Rake station, waving at passengers. He later told staff he was from Birmingham.

Irate police slammed the stunt as "nonsensical and idiotic".

Police hunt three men who threatened priest with gun in St Helens church robbery

Police are hunting three men who threatened a priest with a handgun and stole money from his church in St Helens

They forced him to empty a safe at St Vincent de Paul church in Parr last night and took cash collected for a children's orphanage in Zimbabwe.

The priest wasn't physically hurt, but officers say he has been left shaken by the ordeal. 

Sarah Winstanley, a parshioner who lives close to the church, said it is a "disgrace" .

She said: "It is extremely scary, nowhere is safe. It is a church. Who targets a church especially at Christmas?"

Man killed after being hit by scrambler-style bike named

A pedestrian who died after being hit by a scrambler-style motorbike in Kirkby has been named.

Kevin McPadden, 36, from Kirkby, was hit by the vehicle at the junction of County Road and St Kevin's Drive yesterday afternoon. 

A 27-year-old from Kirkby and a 17-year-old boy from Melling have been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

Armed robbers force priest to open safe in St Helens church theft

Armed robbers have stolen money collected for a children's orphanage from a church.

Three men, one of them believed to be holding a gun, threatened the priest at Vincent de Paul Church on Derbyshire Hill Road, St Helens, on Tuesday.

They forced him to open a safe before taking cash and making off on foot.

The priest was not assaulted or injured but was left extremely shaken by the "frightening incident", Merseyside Police said.

Anti-poverty campaigners in Liverpool call on the government to change Spare Room Subsidy

Anti-poverty campaigners in the Liverpool City Region are calling on the government to make major changes to the Spare Room Subsidy - or so-called Bedroom Tax. 

They say they have evidence that families with children are cutting back on essentials such as food and heating to pay the tax.

The local Life Chances Commission has written to the Work and Pension Secretary demanding a major overhaul of the tax.

Arrests after man dies in scrambler crash

A man has died after being hit by a scrambler-style motorbike in Kirkby, police have said.

The 36-year-old pedestrian from Kirkby, was critically injured at the junction of County Road and St Kevin's Drive at 16:15 on Tuesday.

He was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

A 27-year-old man and a boy, 17, who police believe were on the 250cc Honda bike, have been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.
