Football: Everton can 'draw confidence from stirring win'

BBC Sport

Match of the Day's Simon Brotherton has cast his eye across tonight's Merseyside derby and says Everton can take heart from their recent win over Arsenal.

Everton players celebrate
PA

He said:

It's six years since Everton last enjoyed a league win over their great rivals from across Stanley Park and, in recent times, it's been a derby very much dominated by the red half of Merseyside.

That win for Everton in October 2010 is their only success in the past 19 meetings.

However, they will draw confidence from a stirring and much-needed win over Arsenal on Tuesday, which stopped the rot after just one win in the previous 10.

Liverpool are unbeaten in the past 11 league meetings with Everton and arrive in scintillating goal-scoring form this season but, perhaps just as importantly, kept a clean sheet in winning at Middlesbrough in midweek, coinciding with Simon Mignolet's reinstatement between the posts.

Football: Everton must 'be calm' ahead of derby, manager says

BBC Sport

Ronald Koeman
PA

He said:

The derby is all about the fans, we understand that but we need to be calm and prepare for the game in the way we like.

It's about preparing the team. You have an emotional part that you need to control. That's the most important.

It's not good. One [derby win] out of 19. We need to accept how difficult it is, win the game and make the fans happy.
