CBBC Hospital 'takeover' live from Liverpool's Alder Hey

Children's channels CBBC and CBeeBies are in the middle of a "takeover" of Alder Hey Children's Hospital. 

They're broadcasting programmes throughout the day with stars like Mr Tumble, Dr Ranj and Hacker T Dog all meeting some of the young people the hospital has helped make better.

Liverpool has weakest performing primary schools in North West, figures show

Liverpool has the weakest performing education authority in the North West at primary school level, figures show.

Ofsted says only 44% of pupils in the city obtained expected standards in reading, writing and mathematics.

The figures come from Ofsted's latest annual report, giving a state of the nation picture of the education system, from early years to colleges.

In the North West, Liverpool isn't the only local authority criticised - the report also says five of Knowsley's six secondary schools have been inspected and none has been judged good or outstanding. 

It goes on to say at secondary level a North-South divide still exists. 

Nationally, 81% of pupils go to a good or outstanding school.

Man 'stole' Chester Cathedral's Greek Lazarus painting

A man stole a cathedral's 19th Century Greek icon and left a cheap Christmas toy in its place, a court has heard.

Vasilijy Apilats, 61, of Crewe, admitted he took the painting from Chester Cathedral but said he bought it for £135 from two men he believed were cathedral officials.

Chester Crown Court heard The Raising of Lazarus painting is estimated to be worth £2,000 and was probably made between 1870 and 1880.

Mr Apilats denies theft.

The trial continues with the jury due to visit the cathedral.

Lancashire Constabulary is investigating Mzee Shemar Mohammed-Daley's death on behalf of the Liverpool coroner.

Merseyside Police officers saw the 18-year-old carrying a knife and "behaving erratically" at the Liverpool One complex on 13 July.

Chief constable complaint 'came from serving officer'

The BBC understands that the complaint made against Cheshire's Chief Constable Simon Byrne, who is being investigated by the county's police and crime commissioner over an allegation about his conduct, came from a serving police officer.

Mr Byrne, the chief constable since 2014, said he could not comment as he did not know the detail of the claim.

Cheshire Police and Crime Commissioner David Keane said he referred the allegation to IPCC in the "interest of openness and transparency".

The IPCC returned the investigation for a "local investigation".

A cat is in a stable condition after being shot in the neck with an air rifle in Huyton, the RSPCA have said.

Nine-year-old Polly was targeted in the Liverpool Road and Tiger Court Business Park area on 23 November before 13:00 GMT.

She was taken to the vets by her owners after she returned home walking abnormally and bleeding.

A pellet was found lodged in the vertebrae of her neck, which the RSPCA said could have been fatal, and she underwent surgery.

Murder probe detectives trying to trace man seen fishing canal

Detectives investigating the murder of Ellia Arathoon from Ellesmere Port are trying to trace a man who was seen fishing on the Shropshire Union Canal.

They believe the man, who was spotted by the canal between Meadow Lane and Lees Lane on the weekend of 29-30 October. may have vital information. 

Craig Andrew Proctor, who is 39 and from Ellesmere Port, has been charged with Ellia's murder and is due to go on trial next year.

Football abuse hotline receives 'staggering surge' in calls

A dedicated football sex abuse hotline has received 860 calls in its first week, the NSPCC says.

Chief executive Peter Wanless said there had been a "staggering surge" in the number of people getting in touch.

A total of 15 police forces - including in Staffordshire and Cheshire - are now investigating allegations of historical child sex abuse in football.

The inquiries come after several former players made allegations of abuse against football coaches.

The RSPCA has started an investigation, after a cat was shot in the neck with an air rifle in Liverpool.

Nine-year-old Polly needed surgery to have the pellet removed. 

The charity says it was just five millimetres from severing the animal's spinal cord, and says the incident could have been fatal.

Cheshire Chief Constable facing investigation

Cheshire's chief constable is being investigated over an unspecified allegation about him.

Cheshire's Police and Crime Commissioner David Keane said he referred the case about Simon Byrne to the Independent Police Commission, who passed it back to the force for a local investigation.

Man arrested after cannabis farm uncovered

A man has been arrested after police found a cannabis farm in Birkenhead.

Officers recovered a total of 20 plants, with an estimated annual yield of nearly £80,000, from a property in Argyle Street South.

A 28-year-old man from Tranmere was arrested on suspicion of cultivation of cannabis, abstraction of electricity and possession of class A drugs.

The Chief Constable of Cheshire Police is being investigated by the county's police and crime commissioner following an allegation about his conduct. 

Commissioner David Keane has ordered an independent inquiry into the claim surrounding Simon Byrne (pictured).

The nature of the allegation has not been disclosed by the commissioner's office.

In a statement, Mr Byrne said he was aware of the investigation but didn't know the detail of the allegation so couldn't comment at the moment. 

He added he remained "focused on my work in keeping Cheshire safe".

Southampton, comfortable winners over Arsenal on Wednesday, will host in-form Liverpool at St Mary's before the return leg at Anfield.

The two-legged semi-final ties will be played in the weeks commencing 9 and 23 January 2017.

Chester library multimillion-pound move public drop-in sessions

Drop-in sessions are being held at Chester Library today for people to find out more about its move to a brand new multimillion-pound building.

The Storyhouse will open in May next year and offers a combined theatre, cinema and library space. 

The old library building will close at the end of March when stock will be transferred over the the new venue.

Extra police officers will be out policing the roads throughout December to reduce the number of people killed or injured in the run up to Christmas.

Last year almost 300 motorists were arrested after testing positive for alcohol or drugs.
