  2. Birkenhead town centre regeneration project scrapped

    Plans for a £30m redevelopment of Birkenhead town centre have been scrapped.

    Europa Pools leisure centre

    The project was due to regenerate the town's market and rebuild the Europa Pools leisure centre, pictured, with restaurants, a food court and a hotel also proposed.

    Wirral Council said it was still negotiating with developers Neptune, but was now also talking to other firms.

    Council leader Phil Davies said the decision was linked to "more ambitious" development opportunities.

    The scheme was announced as part of wider plans to reinvent Birkenhead as one of the North's most desirable places for businesses to invest.

    Teenage spinner Sophie Ecclestone will miss England's upcoming tour of Sri Lanka because of school commitments.

    The 17-year-old, from Chester, took 2-28 on her one-day international debut in the West Indies earlier this month.

  6. Labour party investigating 'claims of anti-Semitism'

    The Labour Party's confirmed it has launched a formal investigation into claims and of anti-Semitism and "uncomradely behaviour" in the Liverpool Riverside constituency. 

    The branch's AGM will be postponed as a result, but party meetings can still take place. 

    Some constituency party members have denied allegations that anti-Semitic comments were made at a meeting earlier this year. 

    The investigation is expected to report back to the party's ruling National Executive Committee in January.

  11. Have you seen missing teenager Jade Roberts?

    Merseyside Police say they are increasingly concerned about the well being of a 14-year-old girl who has been missing since Saturday.

    Jade Roberts was last seen in Widnes, but spends time in Liverpool City Centre, Walton, Anfield and Kensington. 

    She is around 5ft 7in, slim with long brown hair and was wearing a blue coat.

  12. John Lennon MBE return letter valued at £60,000

    It was found tucked in a record sleeve from a £10 car boot haul and valued at £60,000 at The Beatles Story in Liverpool yesterday.  

  13. Hillsborough journalist given posthumous award for organ donation

    An award-winning investigative journalist who was on the Hillsborough Independent Panel has been given a posthumous award for saving lives in her death.

    Katy Jones worked on Granada's World in Action and ITV's Bafta-winning Jimmy McGovern drama documentary Hillsborough, as well as creating the BBC's Ten Pieces. She died from a brain haemorrhage in 2015.

    She has been honoured with the Order of St John Award for organ donation.

    Her husband Mike Spencer said her family were "immensely proud of her".

  14. Plaque unveiled at Dame Beryl Bainbridge's former Formby home

    A blue plaque has been unveiled at the former home of Dame Beryl Bainbridge in Formby.

    The writer lived at 47 Ravenmeols Lane in Formby and went on to describes the house, her family and their relationships with each other in her novel, An Awfully Big Adventure. 

    She died in 2010 aged 77. The plaque was organised by the Formby Civic Society.

  15. Eighteen people, including four children, rescued from Liverpool flats fire

    Merseyside Fire now say 18 people have been rescued from a fire at a block of flats on Hampstead Road in Fairfield.

    Firefighters were called to the four-storey building on Hampstead Road in Fairfield just after 12:30 this morning.

    Four children were among those taken to safety - and eight people needed hospital treatment. 

    The ground floor and first floor hallway were damaged by the blaze - police are treating the fire as "suspicious".

  16. Sky lanterns banned from Cheshire West council land

    Cheshire West and Chester Council has become the latest authority to ban the release of sky lanterns on its land.

    Critics say the small wire and paper balloons, also known as Chinese lanterns, present a fire risk and are a danger to wildlife and livestock.

    Councils in nearby Cheshire East, Stockport and Tameside have introduced similar rules.

    Councillors will also write to the government asking ministers to bring in a national ban.
