Factfile: Liverpool's Royal Liver Building

As Liverpool's Liver Building is being put up for sale we thought we'd bring you a few facts you may not have known about the city's famous landmark:

Liver Building
Get
  • The foundation stone was laid on 11 May 1908 and work was completed on 19 July 1911
  • It cost £533,00 to build and at the time was the tallest building in Europe
  • It was built as a concrete frame with the columns and steel beams - the outer wall of concrete and granite is designed as a weather screen
  • The clock is known as "The Great George" after King George V
  • The four dials of the clock are situated 220 ft (67m) above the ground and have a diamater of 25 ft (7.6m) - which makes them wider than the dials of Big Ben
  • The Liver Birds were designed by German Carl Bernard Bartels and were made by the Bromsgrove Guild, who also made the gates to Buckingham Palace
  • The Liver Birds are 18 ft (5.5m) tall and perch 322 feet (101m) above the ground - each wing is 10 ft (3m) long and each Liver Bird weighs four tonnes (4,000kg)
  • The Liver Building is one of the so-called Three Graces on Liverpool's historic waterfront which became a World Heritage Site in 2004

Could Liverpool City Council buy the Liver Building?

Liverpool mayor Joe Anderson says he hasn't ruled out the possibility of the city council buying the Royal Liver Building.

The Grade I listed property is being put up for sale for the first time in its history, and is expected to have a guide price of around £40m.

Mr Anderson said the authority had already made some "sound investments" on other major landmarks, including the Cunard Building.

He told BBC Radio Merseyside: "If you look at the value of the Cunard - we've been offered £30m for the Cunard Building - we paid £14m [for it].

"The value of buildings is usually increased in the city and its great news. I don't think it will stay on the market long."
