  3. Posthumous Russian honour for WW2 veteran

    A World War Two veteran from Newton-le-Willows has been given a posthumous Russian military medal.

    Arthur Lawrence served on the Arctic convoys helping to carry supplies to Russian forces fighting the Germans on the Eastern front amid heavy attacks from enemy submarines.

    Mr Lawrence was due to be honoured in June but died weeks before the ceremony.

    His family attended a presentation at St Helens Town Hall earlier where they received the Ushakov medal on behalf of Russian president Vladimir Putin.

  4. Further South Yorkshire Police property searches for Hillsborough inquiry

    Further searches of South Yorkshire Police property are to be carried out as part of the investigation into the Hillsborough disaster.

    Previous efforts have already uncovered police notebooks from 1989.

    The Independent Police Complaints Commission said further searches need to take place to see if there are materials which may help current lines of inquiry.

    In April an inquests jury concluded the 96 fans who died at Hillsborough were unlawfully killed at the football ground in Sheffield in 1989.

  5. Police 'know' identity of Formby fire victim

    Police investigating a fire in which a man and about 10 horses were killed have said they know who the victim is.

    The man has not yet been formally identified by Merseyside Police following the fire, which broke out at about 05:40 at Shorrocks Hill in Formby.

    His body was found in a stables along with the horses.

  7. Travel: Queues near Creamfields festival site in Cheshire

    There are queues on Chester Road in both directions at Daresbury, Cheshire, near the Creamfields site, between Delph Lane and Park Lane junctions.

    The four-day festival begins today and ends on Bank Holiday Monday.

  8. Liverpool's Lime Street closes for three weeks as £39m works start

    Part of Liverpool's Lime Street will close for up to three weeks from next Tuesday while the demolition of the site around the Futurist cinema is completed.

    The city council was given the go ahead to carry out the work by the Court of Appeal earlier this month.

    Protesters had disputed claims that the facade couldn't be saved. 

    The entire site is being cleared as part of a £39m redevelopment plan.

  9. Football: Oxford secure deal for Everton's Ledson

    Oxford United sign Everton midfielder Ryan Ledson on a three-year deal for an undisclosed fee.

    Ledson, 19, made one senior appearance for the Toffees in the Europa League against FK Krasnodar in 2014 and has been capped by England Under-19s.

    He spent the second half of last season on loan at Cambridge United.

  10. Chester's Roman amphitheatre 'should not' be excavated

    The British Archaeological Trust has said it is against efforts to excavate all of Chester's Roman amphitheatre.

    Half of the site was uncovered in the 1960s while the other half is underneath a derelict listed Victorian building.

    Council officials want to sell the building, but over 12,000 people have signed a petition calling for a public consultation.

    The trust says the remains should be preserved underground.

  11. Police incident closes major through route in Warrington

    A major through route in Warrington is closed due to an ongoing incident, Cheshire Police has said.

    The A49 from Bridgefoot to Chester Road is shut and drivers are urged to avoid the area.

  12. Appeal after robbery at Warrington petrol station

    An appeal has been launched for information following a robbery at a petrol station. 

    A man armed with a golf club went into the filling station in Wilderspool Causeway, Warrington, at about 01:00  on Tuesday threatening the cashier and demanding he hand over money and cigarettes. 

    The man was wearing dark clothing and had a baseball cap and scarf covering his face.

    Anyone with information is asked to contact police.

  14. Creamfields: Police warn festival goers of drugs and weapons searches

    Police are warning people heading to Creamfields in Cheshire not to attempt to bring drugs or weapons into the site.

    They say there will be there will be searches and sniffer dogs at the four-day event in Daresbury.

  16. Wirral restaurant named in Good Food Guide top ten

    A Wirral restaurant has been named in the top ten in the country in the Good Food Guide. 

    Fraiche in Oxton is ranked 10th in the list of the country's 50 best eateries.

    It is the only restaurant on Merseyside to make the list.

    Police said the body of a man found in a fire at Shorocks Hill in Formby was in discovered in the stables, not a caravan as first thought.

    When Chris Hill leads out Warrington Wolves in Saturday's Challenge Cup final against Hull FC at Wembley, it will be one of two things that he can celebrate this week.

    "It was just something I've always been interested in stemming back from school," the 28-year-old told BBC Sport.

    "It is something for after rugby as well and hopefully it is running itself by then and I can sit back and relax. If not, I can get on the tools and work through it."
