  3. Mozart masterpiece screened in Southport outdoor cinema

    Mozart's comic masterpiece, Così Fan Tutte, will be screened in Southport as part of the Outdoor Cinema season at Kings Gardens.

    The screening will be of a production starring soprano Lesley Garrett, which was put on as part of the Garsington Opera season in June.

    The 24 September showing, which will be free for all, will be preceded by family workshops.

    Eaton Hall Gardens open day takes place this Sunday as scheduled despite the recent death of the Duke of Westminster, who lived there most of his life.

  5. Designer wanted to create mermaid statues for New Brighton trail

    The organisers of New Brighton’s Mermaid Trail are seeking a designer to create six statues of the inspiration for the new walking route, the Black Rock Mermaid.

    The mermaid is the subject of a local myth and was said to have been seen by sailors off Black Rock and near Leasowe Castle.

    The New Brighton Coastal Community Team wants an artist to make six identical statues, which will be customised by children or local groups.

    It is hoped the Mermaid Trail will be in place by spring 2017.

  6. Child hit by car in Toxteth

    A child has been injured after being hit by a car in Toxteth. 

    It happened at the junction of Princes Road and Upper Hill Street. 

    It is not thought the child has life-threatening injuries.

  7. Forensic DNA sprays to be used tackling burglaries in St. Helens

    Forensic DNA sprays are to be used in St. Helens to tackle burglaries, police have said.

    Householders are being offered the spray containing an individual DNA code, which makes it easier to return stolen items to their owners.

    A man is in hospital with head injuries following an assault in Wavertree earlier.

    Police were called to Earle Road at its junction with Webster Road at 12.30.

    His injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

    Liverpool Commonwealth Association have tweeted from the Libation Ceremony in Liverpool today for Slavery Remembrance Day.

    The ancient spiritual ceremony, which involves an offering to commemorate and pay tribute to the enslaved, took place at the Albert Dock and followed the Walk of Remembrance through Liverpool.

  17. Police investigate arson attack at Kirkby home

    An investigation is under way into an arson attack in Kirkby which led to a 25-year-old woman and her two young daughters needing hospital treatment for the effects of smoke.

    Police say a wheelie bin was pushed against the door of a house in Tithebarn Lane just after 02:00 this morning and set alight.

  18. Wirral to hold civic reception to honour Olympic heroes

    The mayor of Wirral will invite Sam Quek and Steve Cummings to a civic reception to celebrate their achievements as part of Team GB’s historic Olympics.

    Sam Quek won gold as part of the hockey team and Steve Cummings was a member of the cycling Road Race team.

    Team GB finished second in the medal table with 27 golds, 23 silvers and 17 bronze medals.

    Details of the civic reception will be announced soon.

  19. Two masked gunmen threaten shop staff in Widnes armed robbery

    Staff have been threatened by two masked gunmen during an armed robbery at a shop in Widnes. 

    One of the men attacked a member of staff inside the store on Ditchfield Road on Saturday evening before another threatened them with the weapon. 

    After taking money from the till, they escaped towards Canterbury Road.
