Artist chosen to honour women's rights campaigner

Eleanor Rathbone, one of Liverpool's greatest political figures, is to be celebrated in art as part of a national campaign marking the 70th anniversary of her death.

Artist Lulu Quinn (pictured) has been chosen to produce the pieces, which will be in the walled garden of Greenbank Park, formerly the estate of the Rathbone family. 

Rathbone, who lived from 1872-1946, was the first woman to be elected to Liverpool City Council, representing Granby Ward from 1909 to 1934.  

Quinn's work will feature three quotations taken from Eleanor's writings about women's suffrage, the family allowance bill and her campaigns for the rights of refugees.

Former residents of a homeless hostel have returned there for a celebration to say thanks for helping to turn their lives around.

The event at Alt Bank House, which is run by Liverpool Housing Trust in Fazakerley, saw past clients share their inspirational stories with current residents.

“Days like this remind me that there’s hope and light at the end of the tunnel," said former resident Maria Burke (pictured above), who spent eight months at the home after her relationship broke down due to anxiety and depression.

Pedalos set for Sefton Park return

Pedalos are returning to the lake in Sefton Park this summer.

A fleet of pedalos and rowing boats will be available for hire at the park’s lake during the summer, starting on Thursday.

They were introduced to the park in 2012 and are operated by charity Local Solutions. They will cost £5 per vessel to hire and will be available from Thursdays to Sundays between 11:00 and 16:00.

'I blame the system' - mother of murder victim William Lound

The mother of William Lound has told his killer she doesn't blame him - she blames "the system which allowed it to happen".

Maureen Lound from Birkdale, Southport, was speaking after Lee Arnold was jailed for a minimum of 23 years for stabbing her son to death in a transphobic attack in Salford.

"Arnold is a diagnosed paranoid schizophrenic with a history of violence," she said. "He should not have been roaming the streets of Greater Manchester without supervision."

She added that her daughter Gini took her own life "almost certainly as a result of Arnold's crime".

The judge at Minshull Street Crown Court said he hopes the authorities will carefully consider criticism of the mental health care Arnold received.

The judge who jailed Lee Arnold for life for the transphobic hate killing of student William Lound described it as a "brutal, premeditated, sustained attack".

Mr Lound, 30, from Birkdale, Southport, was stabbed to death by 37-year-old Arnold in Salford in February, "because of his sexual orientation", the judge at Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court said.

His killer, who had been diagnosed as a paranoid schizophrenic, was told he will serve a minimum tariff of 23 years and four months before he is eligible for parole.

A 36-year-old man who killed Salford student William Lound, who was from Birkdale, in a "brutal and premeditated" transphobic attack has been jailed for life.

Lee Arnold will serve a minimum tariff of 23 years and four months before he is eligible for parole, Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court heard.

A man has been given a life sentence for murdering a man in Cheshire.

Slawomir Misiak pleaded guilty to the murder of 35-year-old Marcin Karolewski in Runcorn in April - both men were originally from Poland. 

The 38-year-old was told he will serve a minimum of 20 years in prison.

A final decision on the future of Chester's Roman amphitheatre has been delayed.

In July Cheshire West and Chester Council said a deal to refurbish Dee House, an 18th Century building which sits on top of much of the site, could be completed.

But opposition councillors have triggered a review of the plan, meaning it will be at least September before the proposals can be approved.

Woman arrested over death of man in Sefton is bailed

A woman, arrested in connection with the death of a man in Sefton, has been released on bail pending further inquiries.

The 33-year-old was questioned, after the man's body was discovered at a house on East Street in Waterloo in the early hours of Saturday.

The death is being treated as unexplained.

Croxteth community centre saved by housing association grant

A community centre that has been helping families in Liverpool since 1969 has been saved from closure after its National Lottery funding ran out earlier this year. 

Croxteth Gems Community Association has been thrown a lifeline by Cobalt Housing Association which has given it a £24,000 grant.

Boy, nine, dies in Cheshire crash

A nine-year-old boy has died after a car overturned in Cheshire.

Police were called to the A5117 Elton, near to Hapsford Services area just before 16:00 yesterday where a dark blue Ford Focus had overturned on the carriageway.

The front seat passenger - a nine-year-old boy from Manchester - was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the vehicle, a 42-year-old and a rear passenger - a 15-year-old boy were taken to hospital.

Man arrested over two shootings in Sefton a year apart

A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder in connection with two shootings in Merseyside more than a year apart, police have said.

The 24-year-old, from Bootle, was held on Sunday after a man, aged 23, was shot in the arm in Crosby on 25 July. 

He is also being questioned over an incident in Monfa Road, Bootle, on 11 May last year in which a 29-year-old man was critically injured after being shot in the stomach.
