  4. Rare ducklings hatch at Chester Zoo

    A quartet of rare and very cute white-winged ducklings have been snapped paddling at Chester Zoo for the first time.

    They hatched on 14 May and were caught on camera leaving the nest and enjoying a dip with their mum.

    It's thought there are as few as 350 of this Asian duck species left in the wild - they are normally found near swamps and woodlands but destruction of forests and wetlands means they are under threat.

    Tony Bellew says he's achieved his dream by becoming the WBC cruiserweight champion of the world - but he's still got the drive for more.

    The Evertonian beat Ilunga Makabu at Goodison Park to claim the title on Sunday. 

    Now he is eyeing up a showdown with Russian Denis Lebedev.

  7. Two children rescued from lake at Crosby Marina

    A boy and a girl were rescued after getting into difficulty in the water at Crosby Marina earlier.

    The children were pulled from the lake shortly before 14:30 and taken to Alder Hey Children’s Hospital. Their condition was described as "conscious and stable" but they will remain on the ward over night.

    Merseyside Police are speaking to witnesses at the marina to establish how the children ended up in the water.

  9. Part of Lime Street to remain closed until Monday

    Part of Lime Street in Liverpool is to remain closed until Monday due to the condition of the derelict former Futurist Cinema, Liverpool City Council have said.


    In April, safety inspectors found that the condition of the building, which closed in 1982, had deteriorated and structural experts fear the entire facade could collapse. 

    To prevent any risk to the public the road will remain closed in both directions between Skelhorne Street and Copperas Hill.

  11. Belvedere Academy crash: Driver, 80, to be sentenced tomorrow

    An 80-year-old woman who admitted dangerous driving after a crash that left eight schoolgirls injured in Liverpool will be sentenced tomorrow.

    Norma Stokes, of Booker Avenue, Allerton, admitted five counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving following the collision, which happened outside Belvedere Academy in February.

    The girls' families told Liverpool Crown Court of the trauma the crash had caused, including how the girls are now "deeply anxious" and suffer from "terrible pain".

  14. Belvedere Academy crash: Injured girl's family tell of ordeal

    The family of a girl left with traumatic brain injuries after she was hit by a car outside a Liverpool school have said the girl who went to school that day "no longer exists".

    Liverpool Crown Court heard the family's statement as Norma Stokes, 80, admitted causing injury by dangerous driving.

    Eight girls were hurt in the crash outside Belvedere Academy in February.

  15. Teen banned from matches over Everton racist abuse

    A teenager who shouted racist abuse at Everton players during an FA Cup match against Carlisle United has been handed a five-year football banning order.

    Owen Newbury, 18, from Silloth in Cumbria, was also ordered to carry out 140 hours' community service and pay £145 in costs.

    The abuse was directed at Toffees players after striker Arouna Kone celebrated scoring the opening goal in the fourth round tie at Brunton Park in January, Carlisle magistrates heard.

  16. Tributes to Marbles campaigner and former Knowsley MP

    The leader of the British campaign to return the Parthenon Marbles to Greece, Eddie O'Hara, will be remembered for his "commitment to the cause", campaigners said.

    The former Merseyside MP and university lecturer, who studied Classics at Oxford University, has died aged 78.

    He became chairman of the British Committee for the Reunification of the Parthenon Marbles (BCRPM) in 2010.
