    A Merseyside firefighter has been picked to be the new Milk Tray man in a reprise of a celebrated TV advert campaign that ran from the 1960s to the 1990s.

  4. Jobs could be lost at Fiddler’s Ferry Power Station

    Three units at Fiddler’s Ferry Power Station in Cheshire could be closed by April, subject to the outcome of a consultation.

    The firm Scottish and Southern Energy plc said it had informed the station’s 213 employees of the “difficult step” earlier today, which could involve job losses.

    A spokeswoman said: “The ageing coal-fired station has been incurring substantial losses in recent years and this is expected to continue through to 2020.”

  9. Arrest over Carlisle Everton game racist behaviour claim

    A teenager has been arrested and bailed after reports of racist behaviour during the FA Cup fourth round tie between Carlisle United and Everton.

    It was alleged "racial remarks" were directed towards players following Everton's opening goal at Brunton Park.

    The 15-year-old, from Carlisle, was held on suspicion of racially aggravated harassment by words contrary to Section 4a of the Public Order Act.

    A budget plan by Merseyside's Police and Crime Commissioner has been approved by the Police and Crime Panel.

  11. Petrol bomb attack on Liverpool police officers 'intolerable'

    Merseyside's Police and Crime Commissioner has described a petrol bomb attack on officers in Anfield yesterday as "intolerable."

    Jane Kennedy says she regards the incident in the same category as using a gun or a knife, and says she'll do everything in her power to support detectives in bringing those responsible to justice.

    The incident happened after a raid on a house on Lampeter Road.

  12. Guns and ammunition found in field in Fazakerley

    Two guns and ammunition were found in Fazakerley yesterday afternoon, police have said.

    A pistol and a sawn-off shotgun were found in a black bin bag in a field on Stonebridge Lane by a member of the public.

    Police believe they had been there for some time and have taken them to be forensically examined.

  14. Petrol bomb thrown at Liverpool police officers caused 'minor burns'

    Merseyside Police said four officers were treated for minor burns after a petrol bomb was thrown at them as they tried to deal with a man on the roof of a Liverpool club on Tuesday afternoon.

    The area was cordoned off around the Dockers Club, Townsend Lane, when a group of young men threw the bomb.

    Police said one officer suffered "minor facial burns" while three others suffered "minor" burns to their legs.

  15. 'Milk Tray Man' beat 20,000 others to land the role

    Patrick McBride, a fireman from Liverpool, beat 20,000 applicants to become the new Milk Tray Man.

    To get the part he said: "I had to think of a unique way of delivering a box and thought there would be loads of weird and wonderful ways so I took some fire kit and gave a fireman's lift."

    He then revealed: "When I was in school, aged about 13, I was caught by some friends putting a box in a girl's desk on Valentine's Day - and to this day she doesn't know it was me."
