    A police car has been pelted with rocks by two men during a motorway pursuit, leaving it with a smashed windscreen and an officer with glass in his eye.

    The car was attacked after officers began following a blue BMW on the M6 in Cheshire at about 03:25 GMT.

    Any early wintry showers across Merseyside and Cheshire will soon clear away southwards leaving a mainly dry but cold night with some lengthy clear spells and a widespread frost, with icy patches.

  4. Judge criticises Merseyside Police inquiry into alleged jury nobbling

    Merseyside Police has been criticised for its failure to properly investigate a case of suspected jury nobbling during a rape trial.

    A member of the jury at Liverpool Crown Court had complained that a man in the public gallery tried to add her as a "friend" on Facebook. 

    She was too terrified to stay on the panel and the judge decided it was an attempted jury tampering.

  6. Billinge man's parents cash appeal after quad bike crash

    A couple from Billinge, near St. Helens, are trying to raise £50,000 - to bring their son home from Australia after he crashed a quad bike, leaving him in a critical condition. 

    Mark Middlehurst, 28, was working on a farm in Perth when he lost control of the machine after hitting a tree - he didn't have travel insurance.   

  7. Birkenhead's Hamilton Square plans halted

    Plans for transport and access improvements to Hamilton Square in Birkenhead have now been shelved, Wirral Council said.

    The local authority said rather than deal with the square in isolation it was decided larger-scale regeneration work would take place. 

    A new Growth Plan for Wirral - which aims to bring new investment and support small businesses- is coming before the council's cabinet later this month.

  9. CCTV released after 'nasty and unprovoked' assault

    Detectives have released CCTV images of two men they would like to speak to after a man was assaulted in a Southport nightclub.

    A group of men assaulted a 26-year-old man in Alpine Bar, West St on 13 December. The victim required surgery to have his jaw realigned. 

     Police  said it was a "particularly nasty and unprovoked" assault.   

  10. Former Tranmere Rovers player jailed for sexual assault

    A professional footballer, who previously played for Tranmere Rovers, has been jailed for three and a half years in his absence after a jury found him guilty of sexually assaulting a woman he invited to stay on his sofa.

    Cameroonian Guy Madjo was found guilty at Winchester Crown Court of the offence which took place in August 2014. 

    A warrant for his arrest was issued by the court in May last year but a decision to go ahead with the trial was taken when he failed to return to the country.

  13. Wirral Council reveals new Ageing Well Strategy

    A new plan to improve the lives of older people in the Wirral , the council said. 

    The Ageing Well Strategy sets out how the Wirral Partnership will work to empower and enable residents so that they can live healthy, independent lives in strong and vibrant communities.

  14. Suspected arson attack on Fazakerley home

    Police are stepping up patrols in Fazakerley, after a house was set on fire while four children were sleeping upstairs.

    They managed to escape from the building on Higher Lane by jumping from a bedroom window onto a trampoline. 

    A man and woman, who were downstairs when the blaze started, also escaped. 

  15. Everton bid for Sam Byram

    Roberto Martinez has confirmed Everton have made an approach for Leeds defender Sam Byram.

    Byram is out of contract in the summer and has turned down a new deal through to 2017 at Elland Road.  

    It is thought the Blues have made an offer of up to £5m but Leeds United head coach Steve Evans said the deal was not concluded.

  16. Liverpool student society barred over 'drug-rape comedy'

    A university has withdrawn official recognition from a student society after a play script culminated in a character being drugged and raped.

    The 2014 script, proposed by medical students for a concert at the University of Liverpool, mocked the anti-rape slogan "no means no".

    The university and its student guild investigated following complaints.

  17. Appeal over wanted man

    A man, 24, is wanted on recall to prison after breaching his licence conditions, Merseyside Police said.
