    There are reports of an accident and one lane blocked causing heavy traffic on the M57 Northbound between J3 (Stockbridge Village) and J4 (Knowsley).

  4. Baubles stolen from Liscard Christmas tree

    A Liscard councillor says she's devastated vandals have targeted the town's new Christmas tree.

    The local community raised funds to buy the tree, after last year's was named as one of the worst in the country.

    Councillor Bernie Mooney hopes this setback won't stop people from making Liscard look festive.

  5. Football: Liverpool pay the most to agents in the Premier League

    Liverpool spent more than £14m on agents' fees to lead the latest Premier League list, which shows total payments at £129.86m - up £15m from last year.

    The Reds spent roughly the same amount as last year - £14,301,464 this term, compared to £14,308,444 in 2013/14.

    In comparison, Everton's spending was down by over £1m, from £5,753,269 last year to  £4,479,432 this year.

  6. Woman who intervened in street row 'murdered'

    A woman who intervened in a street row was murdered when her assailant thrust a broken wine bottle into her neck, a jury has heard.  

    Mother-of-two Alison Wilson, 36, was concerned for the safety of a baby whose mother was arguing with Stephen Duggan, 28, near a chip shop in Widnes, Cheshire.   

    Witnessing the argument from a taxi with a male friend she thought it would be "less intimidating" if she stepped in as peacemaker, Liverpool Crown Court was told.

    Two pensioners were targeted by pickpockets in the town centre earlier today.

    Police have reported that a large amount of cash was stolen from the pensioner while near to Holy Trinity Church on Sankey Street today, Tuesday.

  10. Man jailed again over Liverpool teen's murder

    A man who strangled his 17-year-old girlfriend in a row about seeing other people has been jailed for life for a second time for her murder.

    Callum Wilcocks, 23, of Hale Drive, Speke, was convicted of killing Kelsey Shaw at a flat in Widnes, Cheshire, in April 2011.

    A re-trial was ordered last October after his defence challenged the conviction. But a jury earlier today at Liverpool Crown Court found him guilty for a second time.

  14. Baby suffered 27 fractures in two weeks, jury hears

    A jury at Liverpool Crown Court has heard how a three-month-old baby suffered 27 fractures to his body over a two week period. 

    The injuries were discovered when doctors carried out an x-ray at Whiston Hospital. 

    The boy's parents, who are from St Helens but can't be named for legal reasons, deny a charge of causing a child to suffer physical harm.

  16. Couple who died in 'intense' Wallasey house fire named

    An elderly couple who died after an "intense" fire at a house in Wallasey have been named.

    The body of Robert Watson, 85, was found inside the property in James Street, while his wife Enid, 84, was rescued but died in hospital.

    Two police officers tried to save them after they spotted the blaze on Friday evening, but were driven back by the "intense" heat and smoke.

    The officers were not injured and police say the fire is not being treated as suspicious.

    A elderly couple who died following a house fire in Wirral on Friday have been named as 85-year-old Robert Watson and his wife, 84-year-old Enid Watson.

    Police say the fire is not being treated as suspicious and investigations are ongoing.

  20. Police seize £2m and arrest nine as they target "elusive" criminals

    Police have seized about £2m in cash and arrested nine people as part of an operation targeting who they say are Merseyside's "more elusive" criminals.

    The money was found at a property in West Derby - one of 25 addresses raided across the region. 

    Eight men and one woman are being questioned on suspicion of a range of offences, including domestic violence, drug dealing, robbery and assault.

    Merseyside Police will crackdown on drug driving as part of this year’s Christmas road safety campaign.

    While drink-driving is falling, drug use among drivers appears to be on the rise, with cocaine and cannabis the two most commonly used in Merseyside.

  23. Teachers at Sefton school start three day strike

    Teachers at a school in Sefton are beginning a three day strike this morning, over workloads and bureaucratic systems which they say "get in the way of delivering high quality teaching".

    The action by staff at Crosby High has been called by the National Union of Teachers.

    The school is expected to be closed until Friday.

    The Grand National will start an hour later next year at 17:15 - its latest ever start time, race organisers have announced.

    The "People's Race" at Aintree Racecourse on 9 April will start later to "provide an opportunity for more racing fans to watch and listen to the greatest chase in the world", a spokesman said.

    The 2015 race was watched by 8.9 million TV viewers on Channel 4 and over 600 million TV viewers worldwide.  

  27. Wirral MP claims people suffering 'life of misery' due to crime

    A Wirral MP is calling for police and local authority anti-social behaviour budgets to be combined to help tackle crime.

    Frank Field says he has been contacted by local people about issues including drug dealing near children playing, motorcycle thefts and a woman who felt driven out of Birkenhead.

    He says there needs to be a better response from police and merging budgets would mean "more value for money".
