  2. Weather: Dry and cloudy night

    This evening should be dry and cloudy, but it will feel cold in any breaks in the cloud.

    Heavy rain will move in from the south west overnight, though, with minimum temperatures of 5C (41F) expected.

  3. Liverpool shopping area to be improved

    Work will begin in the New Year to improve Liverpool's main shopping area.

    The area by Parker Street, Elliot Street and Houghton Street will be revitalised in a £3m scheme to replace paving and "removing clutter".

  4. Conservation work begins on Formby dunes

    Formby's Freshfield Dune Heath nature reserve is undergoing £72,000 work to protect and improve it.

    The 35-hectare nature reserve has a range of habitats and part of it is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest.

    Work is being led by the Lancashire Wildlife Trust.

    Royal Liverpool hospital chiefs have agreed to consider plans for a merger with Aintree Hospital.

    Health bosses say the prospect of the city’s two biggest hospitals joining forces is one of several options being considered to make the NHS fit for the future.  

  8. RSPCA release picture of neglected Westie

    The RSPCA has released a picture of a neglected West Highland Terrier, called Snowy, who had to be put down as he had an untreated tumour.

    The dog's owner, Susan Horncastle, from Wallasey, was given a suspended prison sentence by magistrates and given a lifetime ban on keeping animals.

    She previously admitted causing unnecessary suffering to the dog.

  11. Man, 21, charged over St Helens attack

    A man has been charged in connection with an attack in St Helens in the early hours of Saturday morning.

    A police patrol found two men on William Street - one of them had suffered multiple fractures to his face and has been told he could lose the sight in his eye.

  13. Wallasey fire couple tried to escape 'but couldn't find key', fire crew says

    Fire investigators say they think two people, who died in a house fire in Wallasey, tried to escape the building but couldn't find the key to the door. 

    The couple, believed to be in their 80s, died when flames and smoke swept through the home in James Street on Friday night. 

    Merseyside Fire and Rescue are investigating the cause.

    A man narrowly missed being crushed by a tree which fell during strong winds in Woolton.  

    Dave Roberts, 63, was pulling into the driveway of his home in Heath Close at 3.30pm yesterday when a huge tree uprooted behind him.  

  17. Up to 40mm of rain forecast for Merseyside in next two days

    Forecasters are warning Merseyside could be hit with 30-40mm of rain over the next two days - The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for the region.

    Winds of almost 70 miles an hour were recorded yesterday - the fire service says it responded to more than 30 storm related incidents.

    A former primary school headteacher in Merseyside has been given a suspended prison sentence for neglecting an elderly dog, which smelt like "rotting flesh".

    Susan Horncastle, 60, former head at Our Lady of Good Help Primary School in Wavertree, admitted causing unnecessary suffering to an animal at a previous hearing. 

    Wirral Magistrates Court heard the West Highland Terrier had to be put down when it was found.

  23. Man arrested and bailed over Liverpool city centre assault

    Police investigating an assault in Liverpool, which left a man in a critical condition in hospital, have arrested a man from Birmingham. 

    The 41-year-old has been bailed over the attack which happened on Slater Street in the early hours of Sunday.  

    A 44-year-old man suffered a fractured skull and bleeding on the brain.

  24. Liverpool to host British Transplant Games

    Liverpool will host the British Transplant Games in July 2016.

    As well as celebrating the lives of those athletes taking part, all who have undergone transplant surgery, the Games aim to raise awareness of the need to sign up for organ donation - more 10,000 people in the UK currently need a transplant.  

  25. Chancellor announces Birchwood as first 'enterprise zone' for Warrington

    Chancellor George Osborne confirmed Birchwood will be given "enterprise zone" status in last Wednesday's Autumn Statement.

    During the announcement Mr Osborne revealed 26 new enterprise zones will be created across the UK, including a new Cheshire science corridor.

  28. Man critical after Liverpool city centre assault

    A man is in a critical condition in hospital, after an assault in Liverpool city centre. 

    The 44-year-old was knocked to the ground on Slater Street in the early hours of Sunday and is receiving treatment for a fractured skull and bleeding on the brain. 

    Police are looking through CCTV footage and asking anyone who was in the area at the time to come forward. 

  29. Travel: One lane blocked on M62 at The Rocket

    There is disruption on the M62 after two crashes this morning.

    Eastbound: There is queuing traffic between Junction 9, A49 (Winwick) and Junction 10 for the M6 (Croft Interchange) because of an earlier accident.

    Westbound: One lane is closed and there is slow traffic between Junction 8 at Burtonwood Road and Junction 7 on the A57 (Rainhill Stoops) because of an accident between two vehicles.
