    The family of a man who died after he was hit by a car in Greater Manchester have paid tribute to him.

    Peter Heywood with daughter Michelle

    Peter Heywood, 75, from Stretford, was killed when he was hit by an Audi on Chester Road in Trafford on Tuesday evening.

    A statement issued on behalf of his daughter, six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren described Mr Heywood as a "true gentleman".

  5. Alexis Sanchez's big money Man Utd switch moves closer

    It could be one of the biggest deals of the January transfer window and one that certainly seems to be gathering pace.

    Arsenal's Alexis Sanchez has been linked with a number of clubs, but a switch from the Emirates to Old Trafford is becoming increasingly likely.

    • A move for the Chile international could cost in the region of £30m, even though his Arsenal contract ends in the summer
    • Sanchez, 29, could earn half a million a week in Manchester. Just let that sink in for a moment
    • Since the play-maker arrived in the UK from Barcelona in 2014, he has scored 60 goals at a rate of one every 169 minutes
    • Going the other way could be Henrikh Mkhitaryan. He has been seen at United's training ground this morning and the deadline for registration for players to play in this weekend’s games is midday
  6. Football agent to be sentenced after M6 death crash

    A football agent who killed a Highways England traffic officer and seriously injured another when he crashed on a high-speed journey on the M6 in Cumbria is to be sentenced today.

    Peter Morrison, 37, of the Warke, Worsley in Salford, will be sentenced at Liverpool Crown Court for the crash, which happened near Tebay in February 2016.

    Morrison was originally convicted of causing death and serious injury by dangerous driving at Carlisle Crown Court in November, before the judge in his case, Peter Davies, became ill and sentencing had to be postponed.

  7. Shenzhen beats Manchester to WTA Finals

    Manchester has missed out on hosting the WTA Finals after the Chinese city of Shenzhen was awarded a 10-year deal.

    The season-ending tournament, which features the world's top eight female players, has been held in Singapore since 2014.

    Shenzhen has committed to doubling the prize money to $14m (£10.13m) per year and building a new 12,000-seat stadium to stage the tournament from 2019.

    The other cities that bid were Prague, St Petersburg and Singapore.

  10. £50k reward to help solve shooting murder on 10th anniversary

    Police trying to solve the murder of a man have put out a renewed appeal for information on the 10th anniversary of his shooting.

    Halton McCollin, 20, died on 22 January 2008, three days after he was shot in the head in the China Garden in Stretford.

    The gun was later found and linked to other shootings.

    A £50,000 reward remains offer to find Mr McCollin's killer.

  13. How Liverpool prison became UK's 'worst jail'

    The damning report on Liverpool prison by HM Inspectorate of Prisons says conditions in the establishment are "squalid". But this is just the latest in a series of major problems faced by the jail.

    With England's prisons regularly described as being in crisis, because of budget and staff cuts, it takes a special level of incompetence to be called the country's worst jail.

    But that is precisely the label bestowed on HMP Liverpool last month by many, including a former prisons inspector, after the BBC revealed the appalling failures at the prison.

    The living conditions: rats, cockroaches, blocked toilets and pools of urine, for instance, said to be the worst that inspectors had ever seen, were described by the then justice secretary as "shocking".

    Severely ill inmates at Liverpool Prison often wait days to be seen because of poor care and a lack of staff, a senior psychiatrist says.

    Separately, a review of the prison, published on Friday, says conditions are the worst inspectors have seen.

    Lancashire Care, which runs healthcare at the jail, said it had spent significant sums on more staffing.
