  4. Multi-storey car park planned behind town hotel

  8. Freed fracking protesters vow to 'continue fight'

    Three men jailed for a fracking site protest have emerged from prison after the Court of Appeal ruled their sentences were "manifestly excessive"

    Simon Blevins, 26, Richard Roberts, 36, and Rich Loizou, 31, became the first UK anti-fracking protesters to be sent to prison, after climbing on lorries at Cuadrilla's site in Lancashire.

    Earlier, three Court of Appeal judges ruled they should be released from jail and instead imposed conditional discharges instead of their 15 and 16-month sentences.

    As they emerged from prison, the trio - from Sheffield, London and Devon - vowed to continue their protests as their lawyers said they may challenge their convictions.

    In a statement read on their behalf, they said: "Today's decision affirms that when people peacefully break the law out of a moral obligation to prevent things such as the fossil fuel industry, they should not be sent to prison."

  11. Manchester car thief killer's appeal bid fails

    A burglar who ran over and killed a former Navy officer while trying to steal his sports car has failed in an appeal against his murder conviction.

    Ryan Gibbons was jailed for at least 27 years ast November after crushing Mike Samwell under the wheels of his Audi.

    Mr Samwell had been trying to stop Gibbons driving off from his home in Chorlton, Manchester, in April 2017.

    At London's Court of Appeal, Lord Justice Simon rejected claims that the jury had been misdirected at the trial.
