  3. Gary Neville: 'Right time' to host 2022 Commonwealth Games

    The former Manchester United and England footballer Gary Neville has shown his support to Manchester hosting the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

    He tweeted "Yes let's get it on!"

    Senior council officials have been in negotiations after Durban in South Africa pulled out because of financial problems,  the BBC understands .  

    Liverpool, Birmingham and London have also expressed an interest. 

    But Neville says Manchester is a clear contender.

  5. Champions League: Monaco v Man City

    Manchester City will not sit back and defend their first-leg advantage when they face Monaco tonight for a place in the Champions League quarter-finals, says manager Pep Guardiola.

          Sergio Aguero has scored six goals in his last five games, including two against Monaco on 21 February

    City beat the French side 5-3 at the Etihad Stadium on 21 February.

    Monaco have scored 123 goals in all competitions this season and Guardiola believes it would be foolish to let them attack.

    "The best way [to defend] is score goals," he said.

  6. Man admits care home attack of woman, 96, and burglary

    A man has admitted attacking a 96-year-old woman with dementia during a break-in at her care home.

    The burglary happened at Bedford Care Home on Battersby Street, Leigh, Wigan on 29 January.

    Jake Morris, 23, of Holden Road, Leigh, admitted assault and two counts of burglar at Bolton Crown Court. He'll be sentenced on 10 May.

  7. Aim to double cyclist numbers in east Cheshire

    Cheshire East Council wants to double the number of people cycling in the borough by 2025.


     A cycle-friendly network has been designed (pictured) with key routes connecting people and places. 

    The council will work with partners and local cycling groups to deliver the cycling strategy over the next 10 years.

  10. Oaklands Hospital rated 'inadequate'

    A private hospital in Salford has been rated inadequate after an inspection by the Care Quality Commission.

    Its report found safety at Oaklands Hospital was not a sufficient priority with standard procedures for operations not always followed. 

    It also said patients were at risk because on some occasions, anaesthetists did not provide them with the expected level of care and that most theatre staff did not have the right level of training to react to a respiratory or cardiac arrest.

    Ramsay Health Care UK which runs the hospital said a new management team was put in place immediately after the inspection and that fixing the issues was an absolute priority. 

    It also said significant improvements have been made since the time of the inspection. 

  11. Underground transport 'needs to be considered' as Manchester grows

    Manchester Council's Chief Executive Sir Howard Bernstein has said the city will need to consider an underground transport system to cope with the predicted expansion in population.

    He was speaking at the MIPIM property conference being held in Cannes in France where Greater Manchester and Cheshire's development potential is being showcased to attract future investors. 

    He says Manchester needs to be creative as it continues to grow.

    A driver had a lucky escape when his car caught fire at a petrol station after it was refuelled.  

  13. Four hurt as car hits two families in Wythenshawe

    A man is in hospital with "life-threatening injuries" after he was struck by a car that hit four pedestrians in Greater Manchester.

    The man and his daughter were hit by a Kia Picanto in Woodhouse Lane, Benchill, Wythenshawe, at about 16:45 GMT on Tuesday, police said.

    A woman and a toddler were also hurt in the accident. Police said the extent of their injuries was unclear.

    The driver remained at the scene and no arrests have been made.

  14. The man who was the 'Body on the Moor'

    On 12 December 2015, a man's body was found lying on the ground on Saddleworth Moor. He had died from strychnine poisoning but it took police a year to find out who he was.

    One of the few people with any insight into the puzzle behind the man's death was Maureen Toogood.

    Maureen says she met David Lytton in 1968. She was suffering from flu at the time but had ventured out to Finchley in north London to buy a stereo. It was the Last Night of the Proms and she wanted to enjoy listening to it at home.

    "I didn't feel very well. I was on my knees, and I was collapsing. There was a young man who went 'Oh, hang on, hang on I'll come over,'" she remembers.

    "He walked home to my flat and he made me a nice cup of tea. We hit it off. He made me some toast - I hadn't had any breakfast and he stayed with me until my flatmates came home."

  16. FC Rostov pitch closed by Russian Premier League after Mourinho criticism

    A week after Jose Mourinho criticised the FC Rostov pitch, the Russian Premier League has "closed" the club's stadium .

    Manchester United  drew 1-1  at the Olimp-2 Stadium in their Europa League last-16 first-leg tie last Thursday.

    "It's hard for me to believe we are going to play on that field, if you can call it a field," Mourinho had said.

    Rostov now have until 24 March to bring their pitch up to standard.

  18. John Culshaw: Mum's anger over son's organs stored in police lab

    A mother is preparing to bury her son for a second time after being told his organs were removed and stored in secret for more than 20 years.

    Stabbing victim John Culshaw's remains were retained by Greater Manchester Police without his family's knowledge.

    Dozens of other families have also been told their loved ones' body parts were kept by the force which has admitted there could be more body parts unaccounted for. 

    GMP said whether or not to contact the affected families was a decision it "agonised over for a number of months".

    It became illegal in 2006 to remove or store human tissue without families' consent following an investigation at Liverpool's Alder Hey hospital in 1999.
