  3. BreakingOpen verdict at inquest into death of mystery moor man

    The inquest into the death of David Lytton, who was found dead on Saddleworth Moor in 2015, has recorded an open verdict.

    The coroner said: "There was no way I could be sure as to Mr Lytton's prevailing intention. 

    "Whilst accepting therefore, he died of his own hand, the only appropriate conclusion I can reach is an open conclusion." 

    It took police more than a year to establish Mr Lytton's identity and a "provisional" cause of death was given as  "strychnine poisoning".

  4. Mystery moor man was a loner, inquest told

    A man whose body was found in mysterious circumstances near a reservoir on Saddleworth Moor was a loner, an inquest into his death has heard.

    David Lytton, 67, from London, was discovered at Dove Stone Reservoir in Greater Manchester on 12 December 2015.  

    It took police more than a year to establish his identity and a "provisional" cause of death was given as  "strychnine poisoning".

    Mr Lytton's brother, Jeremy, spoke at the hearing and described him as "very insular".

    After finishing university "he didn't want to be with anyone," he told the hearing.

  5. Manchester offers to help host 2022 Commonwealth Games

    Manchester City Council has offered to help host the 2022 Commonwealth Games after Durban in South Africa pulled out because it could no longer afford it.

    Liverpool, which is bidding for the 2026 Games, has offered to step in and now Manchester has offered to help a Northern event.

    Manchester hosted the 2002 event which saw 5,000 athletes from 72 countries visit the city as well as venues such as the City of Manchester Stadium and the Velodrome built.

    A council spokesman said: "If we were invited to help we would be pleased to work with the Commonwealth Games Federation and the Government to ensure the delivery of a successful 2022 Games in England, which could make a significant contribution to the growth of the Northern Powerhouse as well as supporting the Commonwealth sporting family."

  9. 'Mannequin challenge' men sought after Salford robberies

    Police have revealed they want to speak to a group men who posed for a mannequin challenge after two robberies in Salford.

    Two men were robbed of their mobile phones five minutes apart on 14 November 14 by offenders who then got into a blue Ford Focus.

    Police later stopped a Ford Focus in Manchester city centre and found the mannequin challenge footage on a mobile phone in the car that had been filmed between the robberies.

    A 22-year-old who was driving the car, was arrested and bailed but is now wanted by police after failing to return to answer his bail.

    PC Kelly Ellis is one of an increasing number of UK police officers who are undertaking firearms training in Cheshire.

  14. Footsteps support service for runaways launched

    A new support service to reduce vulnerable children and young people going missing in Greater Manchester is being launched.

    The Children's Society will be working with youngsters who've run away at least twice in the past 12 months.

    According to the National Crime Agency, more than 16,000 youngsters went missing in the region last year.
