Metrolink donates used parts to Heaton Park Tramway

The Heaton Park Tramway has received a donation of used tram rail and fittings from Metrolink.

The equipment was taken from the track used to run trams through part of the city while St Peter’s Square was redeveloped.  

Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) provided them for the growth of the popular service, which has already been extended three times and is now about 1km in length.

The tramway is run by the volunteer-led Manchester Transport Museum Society.  

We have worked closely with TfGM for a number of years and acknowledge their respect for preserving transport history within Greater Manchester.

Arriva Rail North staff to be balloted in guard row

Workers on Arriva Rail North are to be balloted for strike action in a row over the role of guards.

The Rail, Maritime and Transport (RMT) union said members will vote on whether to take action, citing a failure to give assurances over the role's future.

The union is involved in a row with Southern Rail on the same issue and also recently announced a ballot of its members on Merseyrail.

The role of the guard was "safety critical", the union said.

Son appeals for robber to return mum's wedding ring

The son of an 87-year-old woman who was attacked in her Stretford home is appealing for the robber to return her wedding ring. 

Worn by Eileen Blane for the last 63 years, it was forced off her finger during the attack last Friday.

Suspected drug dealers arrested in dawn raids

Twelve suspected drugs offenders have been arrested during dawn raids on 15 properties across north Manchester.

Police searched homes across Newton Heath, Harpurhey, Moston, Salford and Failsworth as part of crackdown on organised crime.

Code-named Operation Rudow – the action formed part of a multi-agency operation to infiltrate and disrupt the supply of drugs in the city.

The arrested people were held on suspicion of a number of drug-related offences including suspicion of supplying Class A drugs.

Talent show's auditions take place in Salford

As if staging two Saturday primetime shows - The Voice UK and Let It Shine - wasn't enough, Salford is currently hosting the latest auditions for Britain's Got Talent at The Lowry.

In a statement, Anderson said he chose to sell striker Zach Clough to Nottingham Forest for £2.5m after Holdsworth failed to invest funds.

However, ex-Bolton striker Holdsworth, 48, stated he was never made aware of the sale on transfer deadline day.

The pair took over the Trotters in a £7.5m deal in March 2016.

"The sale happened without any communication to me and was not brought to the attention of, nor approved by, the board," said Holdsworth.  

Family pay tribute to 'happy, loving' boy, 15, killed in motorcycle crash

The family of a 15-year-old who was killed in a motorcycle crash have paid tribute to their "beautiful, brave boy".

Cameron Chadwick died in hospital after the bike he was riding struck a lamp post in Norley Hall, Wigan, on Tuesday afternoon.

“Cameron was taken from us all too suddenly. Family and his friends are devastated from his loss, and life itself will never be the same," his family said.

“The happiest, funniest, loving lad.  We love you Cameron, always and forever in our hearts.”  

Man arrested as police seize drugs haul

Police seized drugs and cash and arrested a 37-year-old man in Manchester City Centre earlier.

Officers told in a tweet how they recovered 278 wraps of Spice, £400 in cash, a wrap of cocaine and a knife.

A car was also seized.

Man Utd earns record quarterly revenues

Manchester United say they remain on track for record revenues for the current financial year, after making record quarterly revenues.

The Premier League's new TV deal meant broadcast revenues were up 40.8% in the last three months of 2016, while match day income rose 27%.

Total revenues were £157.9m, up from £133.8m a year ago. The club now expects revenues of £540m this year.

The Red Devils currently lie sixth in the Premier League.

Bergsson, 51, is standing for election as president of the Icelandic Football Association this weekend.

He thinks the game would be better off having more ex-players running it.

Manchester-Guernsey pilot accused over ice diversion

Poor decision-making by a pilot led to a commercial flight having to divert, investigators have said.

The Manchester to Guernsey Aurigny flight landed at East Midlands Airport on 4 March 2016.

The Air Accidents Investigation Branch concluded ice contamination was the cause of problems and could have been avoided if the aircraft had been de-iced.

A build-up of ice on the tail led to difficulties with pitch controls.

Judges rejected the appeals of Shabir Ahmed, Abdul Aziz, Adil Khan, Abdul Rauf against a move to strip them of their British citizenship. 

Ringleader Ahmed, 63, previously claimed his convictions were a conspiracy to "scapegoat" Muslims. The ruling said they could apply to appeal to the Court of Appeal on legal grounds only.

The ringleader of a child sex grooming gang has lost a battle to retain his British citizenship.

Shabir Ahmed, 63, claimed his child sex offence convictions in 2012 was a conspiracy to "scapegoat" Muslims, an immigration tribunal heard.

Ahmed, who is serving a 22-year jail sentence, appeared at the First-tier Immigration Tribunal, sitting at Manchester Crown Court.

He appealed against a decision to strip him of UK citizenship.

Bolton Council is to decide on plans to build nearly 100 new homes on fields in Bromley Cross.

The area is classed as "other protected open land" by the council and includes a tree protection area.

Locals have protested against the developer's proposals and held a candlelit vigil for the land.

Conservative councillor David Greenhalgh will be in the council meeting later.

He told BBC Radio Manchester the infrastructure of the area would not be able to cope.

Transgender girl, 11, shot in school with BB gun

The mother of an 11-year-old transgender girl who was shot with a BB gun claims her school has not done enough to stop the bullying.

She said five months of escalating bullying has had a "terrible effect" on her daughter.

The school said it took the attack "very seriously" and had expelled the pupil concerned and apologised to the girl's parents.

Greater Manchester Police confirmed it was investigating the shooting.

CCTV captures moments after fatal 'hit-and-run'

A man has died after an apparent hit-and-run crash in Levenshulme, with CCTV capturing the moment the car stops before driving off through a red light.

Shahid Tarafdar, 45, was hit by a silver Peugeot 307 on Stockport Road at about 15:45 GMT on Tuesday. He was taken to hospital but later died.

The car, registration number KW55 EVP, failed to stop and a passenger is shown on CCTV getting out and running off.

Footage then shows the driver mounting the pavement and going through a red light before turning right at Kirkmanshulme Lane.
