Weather: Rain continuing, but feeling mild

Patches of rain are due to continue this afternoon and over night, with mist and fog in store too.

However, temperatures will be mild and hovering well above freezing at about 8C.

Communist mayoral candidate announced

Here's our full story on Peter Clifford, the communist trade unionist who has stepped forward as a candidate in the forthcoming Greater Manchester mayoral election.

Mr Clifford, 61, from Manchester, will contest the election on 4 May on behalf of the Communist League.

He will campaign about issues such as policing, tackling anti-Semitism and "declining" health care conditions.

The successful candidate will lead Greater Manchester Combined Authority, which is made up of the leaders of each of the area's 10 local authorities.

Boy and driver guilty of killing man

A boy who punched a man and left him lying unconscious in the street, where he was killed by a careless driver, has been found guilty of his manslaughter.

The 16-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, hit Bradley Moore outside a McDonald's restaurant in Ashton-under-Lyne on 27 July last year.

Father-of-four Mr Moore, 43, fell in front of Jonathan Carter's car and was fatally injured.

Carter, 44, was also found guilty of causing death by careless driving at Manchester Crown Court.

From May the airline will begin summer-only direct flights from Manchester to Spanish sunspots Alicante, Malaga, Ibiza and Palma, the Greek island of Mykonos, Nice in the South of France and a weekly service to London City Airport.

The airline sold virtually all its Manchester routes to other airlines in 2007 amid plans to focus its business on Heathrow.

Elderly woman dies after Stockport crash

An elderly woman has died three days after she was knocked down while crossing a road in Stockport, prompting a police appeal for witnesses.

The woman was struck in Heaton Moor Road, towards the junction with Gladstone Grove, on Friday morning. She died in hospital on Monday.

PC Paul Shore said: “Our thoughts are with the family of the woman and we are currently offering them our support.

“Officers are working to ascertain exactly what happened and we are appealing to anyone with information about to please come forward.

“Anyone with dash-cam footage prior to the incident is also urged to get in touch.”

Manchester housing developments 'reach record levels'

A new report claims levels of housing development in Manchester city centre have reached record levels.

The study, published by Deloitte Real Estate, indicates levels are higher even than before the financial crash of 2008. 

Deloitte's Simon Bedford said the report, which looked at the number of new housing building sites in 2016, is a good sign for Manchester.

Communist candidate to run for Greater Manchester Mayor

A communist trade unionist has declared his intention to stand as a candidate in the Greater Manchester mayoral election.

Peter Clifford, 61, from Manchester, will contest the election in May on behalf of the Communist League.

He said: “Millions of working class people are rejecting bearing the brunt of a worldwide crisis of capitalist production and its never ending wars. 

"I’m standing to help build a movement of working people to replace capitalism which is the source of the problem."

Three people were left trapped following a two-vehicle crash in Manchester city centre last night, firefighters said.

Twelve Manchester United supporters have been banned from attending matches following disorder before an FA Cup fixture.

More than 100 fans were involved in city centre violence ahead of Manchester United's game against Sheffield United on 9 January 2016.

Bottles were thrown at officers amid the scuffles, but no-one was injured, Greater Manchester Police said.

Those taken to court were banned from games for three to five years.

The disorder began when a group of around 80 Sheffield United fans came face-to-face with about 40 Manchester United supporters after leaving a pub.

Greater Manchester Police have confirmed the victim suffered abdominal injuries in the shooting.

A woman has been seriously injured after being shot in a Stockport hotel, say police.
