Cheshire MP urges HS2 route rethink

A Cheshire MP has told BBC Radio Manchester she wants HS2 bosses to rethink some of the high speed railway line's route through the county.

It comes after an independent report - commissioned by anti-HS2 campaigners - claims a section of it is at high risk of collapse. 

The findings say that because of extensive salt mining in the area, more engineering work is needed to make it safe. 

This would come at a cost of an extra £750m, according to the Mid Cheshire Against HS2 group. 

Antoinette Sandbach, MP for Eddisbury, says she would rather the track went up the side of the M6.

Well, former Wigan defender Matt Jackson has been thinking.

Now the club's head of operations, he said: "If you want some crazy ideas to shake up the FA Cup, I've got some.

"How about if a Premier League team won the FA Cup, they could have amnesty from relegation that season?

"Or if you win the FA Cup from outside the Premier League you get automatic promotion to the top flight. Those are ridiculous ideas - but they will never happen."

Breast flash GMP police chief expresses 'deep regret'

A top police officer who exposed a breast and mocked a colleague's "boob job" has expressed "deep regret" about what happened and said the "responsibility for what happened is mine and mine alone".

Assistant Chief Constable Rebekah Sutcliffe, 47, has been allowed to keep her job following a ruling from Deputy Chief Constable Ian Pilling.  

She said she had been under "significant personal and professional pressure" and "foolishly became drunk".

"I did not mean any of the things that I said and I am dismayed that I was so unkind and unfair," she added. 

"I am very grateful that I have been given the opportunity to return to work."

Protests over Donald Trump's travel ban

A protest is planned in Manchester against Donald Trump's controversial ban on immigration from seven countries.

Protests have already been taking place across the US against Mr Trump's executive order.

Demonstrations are also planned in London, Bristol, Brighton, Liverpool, Leeds, Sheffield, York, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Cardiff and Swansea. They are due to begin at about 17:00.

A mother incensed at the installation of anti-homeless metal spikes outside a Manchester building has hit out at the owner - with cushions.

So Ms Platt recruited sons George, 11, and Sam, 10, and they "piled down to Primark" to buy cushions to cover them.

Breast flash police officer case was 'difficult time' for force

Greater Manchester Police's Chief Constable Ian Hopkins said the misconduct case against top officer Rebekah Sutcliffe had marked "an incredibly difficult time" for the force.

"When I was made aware of what happened I immediately arranged for an outside force to investigate and Assistant Chief Constable Sutcliffe was suspended from duty," he said.

"ACC Sutcliffe has been through a completely open, transparent and independent misconduct process.

"What is important now is that we move forward. ACC Sutcliffe has by her own admission behaved in an unacceptable manner and has apologised at the outset."

Assistant Chief Constable Rebekah Sutcliffe told Supt Sarah Jackson in a drunken tirade that her "credibility was zero" after she had a "boob job" and berated her as a "laughing stock".

She then went on to pull down the front of her dress, saying: "These are the breasts of someone who has had three children - they are ugly but I don't feel the need to pump myself full of silicone to get self-esteem."

Following a misconduct hearing last year, a disciplinary panel found she had committed gross misconduct, but GMP Deputy Chief Constable Ian Pilling ruled earlier she would received a final written warning and could keep her job.

Dementia sufferer, 97, hit in Leigh care home burglary

A 97-year-old woman with dementia has been attacked during a break-in at her care home.

Police said the burglary happened between 04:00 and 07:00 on Sunday at Bedford Care Home on Battersby Street, Leigh, Wigan.

The victim was treated for minor injuries "but her injuries could have been much worse", police said.

CCTV footage of the suspect riding a bicycle near the scene has been released by police.

An electrical fire at Manchester United's Old Trafford stadium was dealt with "quickly and effectively", the club has said.

A club spokesman said:

A small electrical fire was identified quickly in the Sir Bobby Charlton stand around 07:00 today.

The fire brigade attended and the isolated incident was dealt with quickly and effectively.

There was minimal damage to the area and there were no injuries.

Electrical equipment sparks Old Trafford fire

A fire broke out in a lift motor room at Manchester United's Old Trafford stadium earlier.

The blaze broke out at about 07:00 in the ground's south stand. 

Firefighters isolated the electrical supply and put out the flames. There were no reports of any injuries.

A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after the body of a 46-year-old woman was found at a house.

Chrissy Kendall was found dead at a property in Kinver Road, Moston in Manchester, at 13:00 on Saturday.

Det Supt Phil Reade said: "My thoughts are with Chrissy's family at this devastating time." The results of post-mortem tests are expected later.

A 46-year-old man, who was arrested in Failsworth, is in police custody for questioning.
