The walker was so enraged after being soaked from behind that they dialled 999.

The incident happened in the city centre in the last 24 hours.

Kitty the cat bites off more 'Kitty' than she can chew

A cat named Kitty underwent life-saving surgery after swallowing a toy cat - also named Kitty.

An x-ray revealed the toy had become lodged in the pet's abdomen and was threatening to perforate her intestine.

But the ginger tabby, from Denton, is now home and recovering well after her iop.

Owner Paul Grice, 38,said: "We were really upset as we'd had Kitty from a little kitten."

The move comes a week after United activated a similar extension to Marouane Fellaini's contract.

Ecuador international Valencia, 31, was bought as a winger from Wigan in 2009 for an undisclosed fee.

He was converted into a full-back by former United boss Louis van Gaal, having been used occasionally in the role by Sir Alex Ferguson.

Anthony Grainger, 36, was shot once in the chest during a Greater Manchester Police (GMP) operation in Culcheth, Cheshire, in March 2012.

The inquiry into his death heard police believed he was preparing for an armed robbery.

The police watchdog made 16 findings critical of GMP.

Research on human embryos can only happen under a licence in the UK and it is currently illegal to keep them alive in laboratories for more than 14 days after fertilisation.

There are calls for a government inquiry into allowing embryos to be experimented on for longer, and a new BBC commissioned poll shows 48% of people support increasing the limit up to 28 days.

Ms Brown, was born in 1978 after her parents became the first in the world to successfully undergo IVF treatment in Oldham.

A woman who bought a souvenir jug in Turkey more than 50 years ago is to return it after discovering it is a bronze-age urn.

Thelma Bishop from Gatley in Stockport bought the ceramic jug for a few dollars while on holiday in the 1960s.

Its history was discovered by auctioneers after Ms Bishop decided to sell it.

She was told she could have been prosecuted for removing it. Turkish officials are said to be "delighted".

Football: Manchester City defender Bacary Sagna fined for Instagram post

Manchester City defender Bacary Sagna has been fined £40,000 by the Football Association after posting "10 against 12" on Instagram following a match.

The France international, 33, made the remark after his side's 2-1 Premier League win over Burnley on 2 January.

City were reduced to 10 men in the 32nd minute of the match, when referee Lee Mason sent off midfielder Fernandinho.

The FA said the post, which was later deleted, "questioned the integrity of the match official".

Grainger inquiry: Police shooting based on 'old intelligence'

A public inquiry into the death of a man shot by police has heard that officers relied on "out-of-date intelligence".

Anthony Grainger, 36, from Bolton, was shot by police through the windscreen of a stolen Audi he was in during a pre-planned operation in Culcheth, Cheshire, on 3 March 2012. 

The inquiry at Liverpool Crown Court was told that GMP were investigating a number of individuals, including Mr Grainger, who were suspected of conspiring to commit armed robberies.

The IPCC found the operation relied heavily on "out-of-date" intelligence in relation to Mr Grainger and that briefings to officers contained "inaccurate information". 

The watchdog also found the officer who pulled the trigger - referred to as Q9 - may have committed a criminal offence.

Lancashire have named former captain Glen Chapple as their new head coach on a three-year contract.

The 42-year-old was appointed acting head coach after predecessor Ashley Giles' move back to Warwickshire was announced last week.

Chapple spent the majority of the 2014 season as player-coach when Peter Moores left to take charge of England, and was first-team coach under Giles.

Former all-rounder Chapple has been with the Old Trafford club since the age of 18 and took 1,373 wickets and scored 11,088 runs in all formats during his playing career.

Manchester gallery boss is Tate's first female director

Maria Balshaw, the head of Manchester's acclaimed Whitworth Art Gallery, has been chosen to run the Tate art empire.

Dr Balshaw will become the first female director in the Tate's 120-year history and will replace Sir Nicholas Serota, who has been at the helm since 1988.

She will take charge of the Tate Modern and Tate Britain in London as well as offshoots in Liverpool and St Ives.

Under her stewardship, the Whitworth had an award-winning expansion in 2015. She also runs Manchester Art Gallery.

Murder charge over Rochdale alleyway stabbing

A man has been charged with murder following the death of a 33-year-old who was found stabbed in an alleyway.

The body of Matthew McKenzie was found by a passer-by near Promenade Street in Heywood, Rochdale, at about 23:25 GMT on 12 January.

A post-mortem examination found he died as a result of a stab wound to his chest.

James Hurst, 28, of Littlemoor Lane, Oldham, is due to appear at Bury Magistrates' Court.

Anthony Grainger: Police shooting public inquiry starts

A public inquiry has started into the death of an unarmed man who was shot in his car by a police marksman.

Anthony Grainger, 36, of Bolton, was shot once in the chest during a Greater Manchester Police (GMP) operation in Culcheth, Cheshire in 2012.

Judge Thomas Teague QC has ruled that the officer who fired the shot should give evidence from behind a screen.

He will examine the use of armed police and whether Mr Grainger's life could have been saved after he was shot.

Rugby Union: Sale Sharks players reported over 'team leaks' before Bristol match

Sale have complained that one of their players passed team information to Bristol before their Premiership match on 1 January.

The Sharks have lodged a protest with the Rugby Football Union, claiming the player - understood to be former Bristol wing Tom Arscott - released confidential details.

They have also made a complaint against the Bristol player involved.

Bristol won 24-23 at the AJ Bell Stadium after trailing 15-0.

Injured man held over house explosion

A man has been arrested following a suspected gas explosion at a house in north Manchester.

The blast reduced much of the end terrace property in Cecil Road, Blackley, to rubble on Monday afternoon.

Two men were taken to hospital. One is critical and the other is in a stable condition.

The latter, a 33-year-old man, is being held on suspicion of causing an explosion to endanger life.

The 33-year-old is in a stable condition, police said.

“Good progress is being made as we continue to investigate the cause of the explosion, but we still need to hear from anyone who believes they have any information about what happened.

“The house is now being treated as a crime scene. Given the problematic working conditions, it may be several days before we will be able to return the street to normality."

Serious damage was caused to two properties on Cecil Road yesterday which saw two men hospitalised.

Police investigating the suspected murder of a woman missing for 15 months have discovered a body.

The body, believed to be that of Victoria Cherry, 44, of Fulwood, Lancashire, was found by Greater Manchester Police at a house in Toronto Street, Bolton, on Monday.

It was discovered following the earlier arrest of a 43-year-old man on suspicion of murder.

Ms Cherry has not been seen since October 2015.

Ex-Manchester United and Netherlands boss Louis van Gaal says he has retired from coaching after a 26-year career.

Van Gaal, 65, has been out of work since being sacked by United hours after winning the FA Cup in May 2016.

"I thought maybe I would stop, then I thought it would be a sabbatical, but now I do not think I will return to coaching," Van Gaal was quoted as saying in Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf.

Van Gaal also had spells in charge of Ajax, Barcelona, Bayern Munich and AZ.

Investigations continue into Blackley house collapse

Fire crews remained at the scene of a suspected gas blast in Blackley overnight which resulted in the collapse of a terraced house.

Two people were taken to hospital and three others were treated for injuries at the scene on Cecil Road yesterday afternoon.  

An investigation team will return today to continue working towards discovering the exact cause of the explosion, said Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service.
