  3. Manchester's £110m Factory venue approved

    Plans for a new £110m arts venue in Manchester have been given the final go-ahead by the city council.

    The Factory, Manchester

    The Factory will host theatre, music, art and other cultural performances from some of the world's biggest names.

    It will be designed by architects OMA, with £78m of the construction budget coming from the government.

    Located on part of the former Granada Studios site, it will contain two performance spaces, with a total capacity of 7,300.

    Cheshire Police say they had an "amazing response" to their appeal for the public to name their new police dog.

    According to the force, thousands of people voted and yesterday they revealed the name would be Axel. 

    Officers say the puppy, the first dog bred by the force, will go into full training now and learn over the next year how to be a police dog.

  6. Toddler critically ill after suspected assault

    A two-year-old girl, from Rochdale, is critically ill having suffered head injuries in a suspected assault.

    The ambulance service were called to the Cheetham Hill area of Manchester at about 19:00 on Wednesday and then alerted police.

    The toddler, from Rochdale, remains in a critical condition in hospital.

    A 34-year-old man and a woman, aged 37, have been arrested on suspicion of assault. They remain in police custody for questioning.

  10. Big rise in flu cases at Stockport

    Doctors in Stockport are urging to have flu jabs reporting a large spike in the number of cases this winter.

    Dr Viren Mehta, Clinical Director of Stockport Clincal Commissioning Group, said: "We have seen a big increase in the number of flu cases and people being admitted to hospital with flu complications.

    "The majority of these are people who haven't had the flu vaccination this season."

  11. BreakingTwo held as toddler fights for life

    A man, 34, and woman, 37, have been arrested on suspicion of assaulting a two-year-old girl from Rochdale who suffered serious head injuries in Cheetham Hill on Wednesday.

    A Greater Manchester Police spokeswoman said the girl remains critically ill in hospital.

    The number of children in care in England is at its highest since the 1980s.  

    Wigan-born poet Lemn Sissay, who was raised by foster parents and also stayed at a children's home, spoke to BBC Breakfast's Jayne McCubbin about his time in the care system.
