HS2 will eventually mean there would be fewer of the current Pendolino trains on the West Coast Main Line to free up capacity.

It was hoped that some HS2 trains would run on the existing West Coast Main Line from Manchester - but that plan has been thrown into doubt.

HS2 said it is working on options for a service to run via Stoke, which could have the potential to serve Stockport.

Residents 'ignored' over housing plan, opponents say

Nina Warhurst

BBC North West Political Editor

There have been renewed calls for council leaders in Greater Manchester to reconsider a 20-year housing plan that would use the region's greenbelt.

At a Trafford Council meeting on Wednesday, opponents to the plan for 250,000 homes - called the Greater Manchester Spatial Framework (GMSF) - said thousands of residents were being ignored.

Labour councillors pushed for all Trafford's councillors to oppose a proposal to build 750 of those homes on a golf course in Flixton, but failed to do so.

The ruling Conservative group said there was a "chronic shortage" of housing and to fail to address it would be to fail the next generation.
