Cash stolen in Heaton Moor Post Office robbery

A "significant quantity of cash" has been stolen during a robbery at a post office in Stockport.

Two masked men forced their way into the post office in Moorside Road in Heaton Moor shortly before 18:15 on Wednesday, while a member of staff was finishing for the day.

The men punched and threatened the staff member but he was able to lock himself in another room for protection and trigger an alarm.

Police have launched an investigation and appealed for information.

Jailed drink-driver was 'irresponsible and reckless'

An "irresponsible and reckless" drink-driver jailed for killing a woman in Stretfort showed "complete disregard" for the safety of others.

Paul Tomlinson, 33, of Sale Moor, was sentenced to six years on Thursday after admitting causing the death of Susan Smythe, 59, by dangerous driving.

Tomlinson partook in a series of dangerous manoeuvres, overtaking and undertaking other vehicles at speed and had a near miss with a car a short time before he hit Mrs Smythe.

He showed no signs of slowing down as he approached the crossing and even after his car threw her in the air, he proceeded to drive at speed from the scene leaving her on the road with catastrophic head injuries which proved to be fatal.

Woman sexually assaulted at home in Stockport

A woman has been sexually assaulted in her own home while her children were in bed, police said.

She was attacked after answering the front door of her home in Heald Green, Stockport to a man shortly before 22.30 on Tuesday.

The man, described as Asian, about 20 years old and 6ft tall with a slim build, grabbed her by throat and pushed her to the ground before sexually assaulting her.

The attacker, who was wearing a dark green zip-up hooded top and dark blue baggy jeans, fled because of her loud screams, police said.

This was a terrifying attack for both the victim and her children who heard their mother’s screams... I would urge anyone who saw anything suspicious in the area at the time to please contact us immediately.

Drink-driver jailed over woman's death

A drink-driver has been jailed for killing a woman whose son was coincidentally sent to the crash in his role as a scene of crime investigator.

Susan Smythe, 59, died after being hit by a VW Golf in Stretford, Greater Manchester in September.

When her son Rob Smythe arrived and informed the victim was his mother, he was immediately taken off the case.

Paul Tomlinson, 33, of Sale Moor, admitted causing death by dangerous driving and was sentenced to six years.

Wigan cocaine-infused coffee gang jailed

A gang from Wigan who conspired to produce cocaine using coffee infused with the drug have been jailed.

Martin Fish and Simon Perks were jailed for 12 years, Christopher Thompson for 10 years and Thomas Gore and Anthony Jenkinson for six years at Liverpool Crown Court on Wednesday.

Gore and Jenkinson operated from an industrial unit in Ashton-in-Makerfield in Greater Manchester where cocaine was pressed, while a makeshift laboratory was found in the property where Fish was living.

A "hazardous chemical process" was being used at the property to filter coffee granules which had been infused with high purity cocaine, police said.

Fish, Perks, Thompson and an accomplice had travelled to Felixstowe Port, Suffolk, to pick up the coffee, which was shipped from Colombia in South America.

Video shared to show 'Muslims do enjoy Christmas'

The video below is of Sarah Yaseen and her teenage daughter, Iqra, from Manchester recording a version of Silent Night.

It has been viewed more than 26,000 time on Facebook already and has been put together by charity New Horizons in British Islam, to show "Muslims do enjoy Christmas" and many families celebrate just like everybody else.

Boxer Amir Khan is planning to launch a team-based mixed martial arts league in Britain in 2017.

The Super Fight League will see eight teams from different parts of Britain competing in a league format.

"MMA is big and getting bigger," the Bolton fighter, a financial stakeholder in Indian MMA promotion Super Fight League, told BBC World Service.

"Fighters like Conor McGregor are making a lot of noise. MMA is hitting some high numbers on pay per view."

Murder investigation launched after man fatally injured in 10-man brawl

A murder investigation has been launched after a man died following a fight involving a gang of up to 10 men in Altrincham.

A group were fighting outside a bar on The Causeway in the town centre at about 02:40, Greater Manchester Police said.

A 31-year-old man was later found with serious head injuries and was taken to hospital where he died.

Storm Barbara threatens wet and windy weather

A spell of very strong winds is expected to develop on Friday as Storm Barbara hits the UK.

The Met Office has issued a yellow warning of wind for Greater Manchester and across the North West.

Stockport Council concerned over direct London service in HS2 plan

Stockport Council has raised concerns that the government's planned new high speed rail network could mean Stockport, Wilmslow and Macclesfield will lose its direct train service to London.

HS2 will eventually mean there would be fewer of the current Pendolino trains on the West Coast Main Line to free up capacity. 

It was hoped that some HS2 trains would run on the existing West Coast Main Line from Manchester - but that plan has been thrown into doubt.

HS2 said it is working on options for a service to run via Stoke, which could have the potential to serve Stockport.

House of Fraser in Manchester city centre has been evacuated following a kitchen fire.

Fire crews were called to the kitchen of the shop in Deansgate shortly after 8.00 this morning.

The small fire took about an hour to extinguish and crews used a pressure fan to clear the smoke, Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said.

It is understood people are now back in the building.

Police who were called to reports of 10 men fighting outside a bar on The Causeway in Altrincham town centre at about 02:40 on Thursday found a 31-year-old man with serious head injuries. 

He was taken to hospital where he sadly died. A post-mortem examination is due to take place later today.

Police have launched a murder investigation and are appealing for information to trace the group of men.

This is such a tragic situation, made even more devastating by the fact it is days before Christmas and what should be a happy time turned into violence.

Someone out there knows who did this, and I want to be able to give the man’s family the answers they deserve.

Bolton Wanderers non-playing staff wages delayed

Bolton Wanderers have confirmed to BBC Radio Manchester that non-playing staff wages will be paid late in December.

Those affected have been informed to expect a day's delay. 

Salaries are expected to be paid later today. 

Wanderers are currently operating with losses of £800,000 a month and uncertainty still remains regarding the transfer of the club's ownership to chairman Ken Anderson.

Ten people to get NHS bionic eyes

A bionic eye implant is going to be available to NHS patients for the first time in a pilot scheme at Manchester Royal Eye Hospital.

The patients have a condition known as retinitis pigmentosa - an inherited disease which causes blindness. Another five will be treated in London. 

The bionic eye is a retinal implant which interprets images captured by a miniature video camera worn on a pair of glasses.

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho wants to stay at the club for longer than his three-year contract because he is "loving" his time at Old Trafford.

Mourinho, 53, joined the club in July, and they lie sixth in the Premier League after 17 games.

In October, the Portuguese said that hotel living was "a bit of a disaster", and United struggled for form until a recent improvement in results.

"I know that if one day they bring a new contract, I will sign it," he said.

Residents 'ignored' over housing plan, opponents say

There have been renewed calls for council leaders in Greater Manchester to reconsider a 20-year housing plan that would use the region's greenbelt.

At a Trafford Council meeting on Wednesday, opponents to the plan for 250,000 homes - called the Greater Manchester Spatial Framework (GMSF) - said thousands of residents were being ignored. 

Labour councillors pushed for all Trafford's councillors to oppose a proposal to build 750 of those homes on a golf course in Flixton, but failed to do so. 

The ruling Conservative group said there was a "chronic shortage" of housing and to fail to address it would be to fail the next generation.
