  3. Manchester Town Hall to be lit up in German colours

    Manchester Town Hall will be lit in the German tricolour in solidarity with Berlin following the attack on a Christmas market last night.

    The building will be lit up in black, red, and gold this evening and until Friday.

    book of condolence has also opened inside the Town Hall in remembrance on those who lost their lives.

  4. First Greater Manchester app users to pay less as onboard ticket price rises

    Passengers buying tickets onboard some Greater Manchester buses are to pay more than those using a smartphone app.

    First Greater Manchester plans to increase the price of onboard tickets by 10p in January but freeze the cost of those bought via its mTickets app.

    It said it wanted to encourage customers to buy tickets in advance on smartphones to speed up journey times.

    Passenger group TravelWatch NorthWest said it may reduce delays but penalised those without the technology.

  6. Houses near Jodrell Bank 'likely to be approved'

    Plans to build new houses near Jodrell Bank look likely to be approved, despite objections from the observatory.

    Cheshire East Council officials are backing the proposals for 24 homes in nearby Somerford, despite warnings household appliances will interfere with the telescope's ability to receive radio emissions from space. 

    A separate plan to build 100 homes in Goostrey was turned down in November on those grounds. The observatory admits any interference from this smaller scheme will be minor, but councillors will get the final say tomorrow.  

  7. Health boards owed £30m by oversea patients

    A survey of hospital trusts in England shows that overseas patients not entitled to free health care left the NHS with unpaid bills totalling almost £30m last year - a sharp rise on the previous twelve months.

    London-based Barts NHS Trust topped the list with nearly £5m in unpaid bills while Central Manchester University trust was 10th with 820,000 owed by overseas patients.

    The government recently reminded hospitals of their legal duty to recover the money, and encouraged them to ask to see passports before giving treatment.

  8. UK police review security after attacks

    Security arrangements for events over Christmas and the New Year are being reviewed in the UK in the wake of the attacks in Berlin.

    Greater Manchester Police have strengthened their presence at the Christmas markets here but say there is no intelligence to suggest an attack is imminent.   

    Scotland Yard and Police Scotland said they were reviewing "detailed plans" for the festive period as a precaution.

  9. House building plan 'based on flawed data'

    The leader of the Green Party in Bury has said a plan to build 13,000 new homes in the borough by 2035 is based on flawed data.

    The Greater Manchester Spatial Framework is proposing that over the next 20 years 250,000 homes will be needed across the region.

    Green party councillor Nicole Haydock said: "The economic growth that they [the government] are projecting, of 2.5% year-on-year and the so-called growth in population, which is actually due to people getting older not a birth explosion or migration."

    A report has said the release of some green belt is "essential" to keep up with the city region's growth.

  11. School's Christmas dinner to be made from supermarket waste

    A Christmas dinner with a difference is being served up at school in Stockport today.

    The festive food for the children and staff at Rammilies Hall School in Cheadle Hulme comes entirely from ingredients that would have been thrown away by supermarkets. 

    It is being created by The Real Junk Food Project which campaign against food waste.

  12. Met Office warning over storm Barbara

    Greater Manchester and east Cheshire are being warned to "be prepared" for strong winds during a storm named Barbara on Friday and Christmas Eve.

  14. Police release photos of woman in critical condition

    Police have released photos of a woman, 26, who is in critical condition in Oldham.

    Officers were called by the ambulance service following reports of concern for a woman in Waterloo Street just after 20:15 on 12 December.

    Gemma Baker, 26, was found with serious head injuries. She was taken to hospital where she remains in a critical but stable condition.

    Det Insp Kenny Blain said the photos have been released "in the hope that it will jog someone’s memory".

    “If you saw Gemma on Monday 12 December, or know her and had any contact with her recently, you may be able to help."
