    Cheshire East's Olympic and Paralympic heroes have been awarded the freedom of the borough at a special meeting of the local council.

    There were also an award for Sir Philip Craven, the president of the International Paralympic Committee, and for Libby Clegg and Laura and Jason Kenny, who could not make the ceremony.

  3. Football: United pair in team of the week

    Manchester United's Jesse Lingard and Zlatan Ibrahimovic have been named in Garth Crooks's team of the week.

    The pair combined to create United's first goal in their 2-0 win over West Brom on Saturday.

    The BBC football analyst said Lingard "played like a grown-up looking to actively hurt the opposition at every opportunity", while Ibrahimovic was "in sparkling form".

  4. First part of new link road opens

    Drivers started using a new link road between Junction 7 of the M56 and the A556 in Bowdon this weekend.

    It is the first part of an £192m improvement of the A556 trunk road between Knutsford and Bowdon, which is due to be completed in March next year.

  7. Football: Gundogan reassures fans after City shirts tribute

    Manchester City's injured midfielder Ilkay Gundogan has taken to Twitter to reassure fans that he is "still alive" after his teammates paid tribute to him before yesterday's victory over Arsenal.

    The whole of the City team took to the pitch in backwards-facing shirts before the game, each adorned with Gundogan's name.

    The move left some fans puzzled - and led the German player, who faces cruciate ligament surgery, to offer his joking reassurances in a message that read: Thanks to my teammates & of course - congrats to my boys to this crucial win against #AFC PS: Don't worry - I'm still alive #MCIARS

  8. Police call off river search

    The search for a man who was feared to have fallen into the River Irwell in the city centre has been called off.

    Police divers went into the river after a bag and discarded personal items were found by the water's edge.

    But no body was found the bag's owner was safely traced.

    BBC football analyst Garth Crooks has named Manchester City defenders Nicolas Otamendi and Aleksandar Kolarov in his team of the week.

    Crooks said "both Otamendi and Kolarov suddenly became proper defenders and started to compete".

  12. Pensioner robbed at supermarket cash machine

    A 72-year-old woman has been robbed as she withdrew money from a supermarket cash machine in Atherton.

    A man pushed her from behind and then grabbed her money outside ASDA on Bolton Road at about 12:00 on 5 December.

    Police are appealing for help to catch the man, who was said to be white, in his late teens to mid-20s and wearing a white hooded top with a distinctive logo on the back.

  13. Almost 200 drink-drive arrests in first 12 days of December

    Greater Manchester Police have revealed they arrested 193 drink-drivers during the first 12 days of December.

  16. Popular violinist postpones Manchester show

    Dutch violinist Andre Rieu has been forced to postpone his Manchester Arena show after one of his orchestra "suffered a severe heart attack".

    The popular musician said in a statement that he had taken the decision after the orchestra member was taken ill on Saturday.
