    Celebrities have been sharing their festive creations on social media.

    TV presenter Coleen Rooney, wife of Manchester United footballer Wayne Rooney, had no fewer than four artificial owls on her tree, which was also festooned with a pair of ice skates.

    A giant 7ft long fish caught in the Indian Ocean has gone on display in Manchester.

    The Goliath brown grouper which weighs 30 stone (190.5kg) was on show at a stall at the the city's Arndale shopping centre. 

  7. New homes project begins in Salford

    Building work has begun on 160 new homes in Salford with the project expected to be finished by the summer of 2019.

    They are replacing 146 houses which will be gradually demolished on the Beechfarm Estate in Swinton. 

    Housing association Salix Homes says existing tenants will have priority but around 40 of the new homes will be for sale or shared ownership. 

  8. Joe Geeling murder: 'High risk' killer has parole bid rejected

    The killer of Bury schoolboy Joe Geeling has had a bid for early parole turned down.

    Michael Hamer, 23, (pictured above) was 14 when he battered and stabbed 11-year-old Joe to death in March 2006. 


    Hamer attacked him after it is believed Joe had rejected a sexual advance. He then put the boy in a wheelie bin before dumping his body in a park.

    A High Court judge dismissed his application for parole saying, despite progress during his sentence, Hamer still presents "a high risk to children and the public".

    Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola could recall defender Nicolas Otamendi, who served a one game-ban at Leicester.

    However, top scorer Sergio Aguero and Fernandinho are still suspended, while Vincent Kompany remains injured.

  14. Industrial unit blaze inquiry begins

    An investigation has begun into the cause of a fire at an industrial unit in Stockport.

    Newby Road Industrial estate

    People living in Hazel Grove were warned to keep their doors and windows closed overnight because of concerns about the smoke from the fire.

    The roof of the unit in Newby Road Industrial estate was found to contain asbestos and a special hazardous materials team were called in to deal with it.

  15. Coach Bennell remanded on sex charges

    Former football coach Barry Bennell has been remanded in custody after appearing in court charged with child sex offences.

    He is charged with five counts of indecent assault on a boy, two counts of inciting a boy to commit an act of gross indecency and one count of assault with intent to commit buggery.

    One of the alleged offences was said to have happened in Cheshire. 

    The 62-year-old appeared via video-link at South Cheshire Magistates' Court.

  16. Cheshire's smallest school gets repreive

    An official review has concluded Cheshire's smallest school should stay open, for the time being.

    Pott Shrigley Church School.

    Governors at Pott Shrigley Church School near Bollington had claimed it was not financially viable to keep open with just 22 pupils.

    A panel of Cheshire East councillors reviewing the proposals has concluded that the formal closure process should not begin "at this time".

    A final decision will be taken by the local authority next week.

  17. 'Give me time' at Man City - Pep Guardiola

  18. Boat skipper appears in court over historical double murder

    A former tourist boat skipper has appeared in court in California charged with murdering a young couple from Manchester in central America nearly 40 years ago.

    Christopher Farmer, 25, and 24-year-old Peta Frampton drowned after being tied to machine parts and pushed off the boat in waters off Guatemala. 

    Silas Duane Boston was arrested after Greater Manchester Police reopened the case at the request of the victim's families.
