clenched fist of man against backdrop of woman sitting

It was part of a month-long campaign to raise awareness of the "under-reported crime", officers said.

The operation comes eight months after a change in the law made coercive and controlling behaviour in relationships illegal, with incidents that stop short of violence but amount to extreme psychological and emotional abuse now recognised as a crime.

Since then, GMP has investigated 55 reports under the new legislation.

We have arrested around double the amount of offenders this month than we do in an average month, sending a clear message - domestic abuse will absolutely not be tolerated here in Greater Manchester and we will do everything that we can to ensure victims are kept safe.

The Liberal Democrat said people would be "understandably shocked and frustrated" just weeks after a number of senior managers were awarded pay rises.

"Whilst I accept the cuts to Manchester are tough, there seems to be little attempt to lessen the blow on local residents and front-line services."

Council leader Sir Richard Leese has previously said the Labour-run authority would have to provide its services "fundamentally differently" in the future.

He added that the job cuts were proposals, and no decisions would be taken until taken until next year.
