Two documented meetings of Manchester and Salford Women's Trades Union Council emerged as part of a research project into the life of the Manchester Irish trade unionist Mary Quaile.

The minutes of the first two meetings were recorded in copperplate handwriting by C P Scott, editor of the then Manchester Guardian.

In 1904, the council was divided over the issue of supporting the votes for women campaign, rejecting a proposal by Christabel Pankhurst to include suffrage as one of its aims.

Some members resigned and established another council that campaigned for trade unionism and women's vote.

Journalist Bernadette Hyland, who is currently transcribing the minutes, said lessons could still be learnt from the members' struggles a century ago.

It is inspiring to be involved in uncovering this fascinating history of womens' struggles to form trade unions and obtain equality in the workplace.

Metrolink map highlights life expectancy across region

The Metrolink map has been adapted to highlight the differences in life expectancy across the area by academics at the University of Manchester.

University of Manchester

It shows a difference of up to 12 years in life expectancy between Timperley and Rochdale.

On average, people in Manchester have a life expectancy at birth of 75 years, compared to the overall UK average of 82 years.

The city also has the lowest life expectancy of any area in the UK for women.

Dr Kingsley Purdam, from the university’s Institute for Collaborative Research on Ageing, said there was a strong link with economic deprivation.

A range of often interrelated factors are linked to lower life expectancy such as low income, employment status, the local environment, access to health care, smoking and alcohol consumption, diet, exercise, social status and social isolation.
